Why? Part 14

Another chap, hope you like.

On her way back to the police station Jenny can’t get the blonde out of her head. Actually, her hazel eyes to be more specific. So much expression in one person’s eyes she’s never seen. Despite the cold, harsh defensive front Emma put forth, the brunette saw much more in them. The desperation, loneliness and…fear. That’s what stood out the most. The brunette understands Emma being scared when she first woke up, in the hospital, a strange woman sitting at her bedside. But to still have that anxious look after seeing the detective’s badge and I.D.? I just don’t get it. She… DUH! Jenny taps her forehead. Of course the girl was apprehensive. If she was, is, a person of interest in her parents death, it makes sense. But why the reaction to Heising? That was different. More like a guilty child being caught and scolded. Knowing they made a mistake, but still trying to be defiant. Still, it begs the question. Why that way with him?

“Jenny?”

“Oh. Hey Ben” So caught up in her thoughts, she hadn’t noticed she was back in the squad room.

“Everything ok? Did you get a chance to talk with Emma again?”

Jenny frowns. “No..yes..I..was..no..not really” She stammers shaking her head. “Sorry…I was thinking”

“Okayyy. I can just guess who you were thinking about” He says with a grin. “But why didn’t you talk to her then?”

“Funny” Jenny scowls, then sighs in frustration as she sits down and tells Ben what went on after their phone call.

“Sooo..” Ben leans back in his chair. “You ‘defended’ her and she couldn’t keep her eyes off you after”

“What??” Jenny looks at him in stunned disbelief. “All I just told you and that’s what you get out of it?”

Ben smiles leaning forward. “Admit it..you liked that she was watching you”

A slight blush touches her cheeks as the brunette remembers how she felt Emma’s eyes on her.

“Uh-huh” Ben smile turns a bit smug. “See”

Jenny’s smile fades. “What if I did? So what? It doesn’t matter what I feel” She answers peeved. “She’s straight Ben. Not only that, she’d involved with Peters” She stresses shaking her head.

“Technically yes, she is. But she’s here and he’s not. From what I’ve been able to find out, they haven’t been seen together for a while. That must mean something” Ben notices a glimmer of hope in his partner’s eyes when she looks at him. But it doesn’t last.

“Ot it could mean nothing at all” She answers a bit defeated. “Even if it did, there’s still Heisig. There’s something between them, I just don’t know what” When Ben casts doubt on her idea…. “You weren’t there, you didn’t see it. He came here from Berlin and kept me from talking to her. I bet you anything she’ll be on her way back there as soon as she’s fit to travel”

“Jenny..you’re guessing. You said yourself she acted like a ‘caught child’ and was short with him. That doesn’t fit with a romance” Ben counters. “Why don’t you just go talk to her. Tell her how..”

“No Ben” She cuts him off. “I won’t. Ok? So just let it go. Just..just tell me about Heisig”

Ben wants to argue further. It’s obvious how much his partner likes the blonde by the way her eyes light up talking about Emma. He’s never seen that look before. But he also knows it’s no use pushing her right now. Jenny has to realize it for herself. Sighing he reaches for a folder and hands it to her.

Hours later, Jenny’s still sitting at her desk going over the report on Heisig. Trying to find a connection between him and the Muellers. The guy is former military who left the service on good terms and an excellent record, tops in his field in a number of areas. He then went to work almost immediately for the Muellers as their head of security. So much for being ‘legal counsel’ Jenny thinks. Still, he’s more than security, I’m sure of it.

Flashback: “He was security for them?” Jenny asks surprised. “Were there threats against them? How did he come to work for them?”

Ben nods. “Yea. No specific threats were mentioned, that I could find. But a lot of people in their position have security. If there was a connection between them, no one seems to know what it is. They have no idea how they came to know him.”

“Ok. What I don’t understand...if he was their ‘bodygyuard’ then why wasn’t he with the Muellers? If foul play is suspected in the accident, wasn’t it his job to prevent something like that?”

“That’s a good question. No one seems to know why he wasn’t there. They think the Muellers had him working on something at the time, but no one knows what. They do say he took their deaths hard, blames himself for what happened”

“I’m sure he does” Jenny scoffs. “Not good for business”

“More than that” Ben goes on. “They say it seemed personal”

Flashback end.

“So, what did they have you doing?” Jenny thinks out loud. Sighing, she rubs her eyes before glancing at the clock. Visiting hours are long over. Is her first thought. She thinks of Ben’s last words before he left. “Jenny, I know you don’t want to hear it, but you should talk to her. What if you’re right and she’s gone the moment she’s released from the hospital? You may not get another chance.”
She sighs heavily staring at Emma’s picture that still sits on her desk. “You probably will leave Koln” After another long moment spent in thought, Jenny gets up shaking her head. “Best to get you out of my head now. Start forgetting about you.” Why not start now? Grabbing her things, Jenny heads out to a bar where she knows she’ll find somebody to help take her mind off the blonde. At least for the night.
