It's been months of hecticness.
Hecticity? Plain old busy. Hubby finished out his first and only year of teaching--spent a great deal of time traveling over the summer (New Mexico, Jersey shore)--taught my little Blossoms to swim underwater--read about ten really good books (
Kim Harrison,
Patricia Briggs). Went into school for a few days to set up my room and handle interviews and such. Had about one anxiety attack a week.
I have somehow managed to isolate myself a bit this past year. Sort of a hunker down and get through it response to stress; it occurred to me recently that I need to stop this. As much of a misanthrope as I am, I am a social misanthrope.
Yes, I know what an oxymoron is.
So my first step on the road to rehabilition is to start blogging again, at least a little.
NCIS
A great deal of my limited free time over the past few months has been spent absorbed in catching shows on DVD. I have now finally watched all of seasons 1-6 (though not in order, or with commentary) of
NCIS, and Season 7 is due to be delivered in three days. (Yay!) I have absorbed almost every fan-fic I could find, even pairings I would not normally read (although Abby/Ducky still wierds me a bit). I have even posted one to fanfiction.net; tow more are in the works, one almost finished. And I have been writing original stuff, sequels to my novella,
The Order. I just haven't manged to finish either of them, nor market appropriately. At least I finally sold enough copies to be issued a royalties check!
The Wire
My other new favorite show is
The Wire. It's been off the air a couple of years, and was on HBO originally, but it is SO GOOD. About drug dealers, cops, and inner city life in Baltimore-- including education. There are no heroes, everyone is flawed, and there is only gray. Fits my mood these days. We were watching an episode that showed the frist day of school for a cop-turned-math teacher...and Hubby said he was having flashbacks. Actually, he drew the parallel between him as a former first year public school inner city teacher watching the show to Vietnam vets watching war movies. Poor man, he has been so scarred by his teaching experience. But it was remarkably accurate, scary as that is. I highly suggest this to anyone looking for a good show to follow.
While we've been watching, Hubby and I have had these moments-- like the drug dealers implementing parliamentary rules of order, or using drug deal profits to teach math, or paralleling drug dealers with city government-- when we thought this show would be awesome to use as a teaching tool for life skills for our students (language aside, but its not like the students don't curse like sailors). Low and behold, the actors from the show created a non-profit and an entire curriculum based on the show. You should check out the
organization and the stories behind some of the actors.
So-- uh, hi again everyone!
