It has recently come to my attention that there is a fundamental misunderstanding going on about the Healthcare debate. Please read the following exchange I had with a dear relative I love with all my heart, even if he is hopelessly liberal.
"Those who make it believe that our system is the best precisely because of its inequality. Systems like those of our European friends, in which everyone has access to high-quality care at a reasonable price, just don't sit right with many conservative Republicans. If a captain of industry can't buy better health care than the guy who cuts his lawn can, then the world just isn't functioning as it should"

Now there is a fundamental lack of understanding of conservatives. We think you should be able to buy the plan you want, period. And Europe is currently shifting toward the right since their liberal policies have wrecked their countries.
Brandon
Yeah but Europe's right would still be a left here. This country is far to right of center naturally anyways. I'm not sure if most conservatives honestly care if everyone has health care. As long as they can keep the status quo and use their income to have better coverage than someone in poverty, it works fine to them.

We want everyone to have health care. We want everyone to succeed, to better themselves, to become rich and powerful. We want people to have the freedom to do what they want, what they are good at. We don't want poverty, we don't want people to suffer. That's why conservatives give more to charities than liberals. We want to help people. We believe gov't interference makes it harder to succeed, that it creates a mentality where it's easier to not try, to simply accept being taken care of.
If you really believe that conservatives are cold-hearted, then you need to re-evaluate your sources.
Conservatives are not evil people who want to keep the lower classes oppressed so that we can recline on their sweaty backs.
We want everyone to succeed. We want every man, woman, and child with a dream to be able to see that dream come true. We want everyone to become rich, to prosper. We want parents to be able to give their children a better life than they had. We want everyone to be healthy, to be loved, to share in the joys of life.
We believe that the gov't, a body which creates nothing, should be limited. We believe that regulation stifles creativity, that it imposes a relentless beaurocracy that strangles progress. We believe that the private sector is made up of people doing their best to improve their lives and the lives of their families. We believe that the majority of today's upper class is made up of people who had an idea and made it happen.
When gov't health care, or nationalized banks and car companies appear, we see the private sector as being threatened. We see gov't's bloated, inefficient body stifling good business. The gov't doesn't now how to make cars, it doesn't know how to perform surgery. The gov't knows how to spend money, how to make a simple task painfully complex. Look at the post office, look at how hard it is to get your first driver's license. Look at the pain and suffering in VA hospitals, on poorer Indian Reservations that depend on the Indian Health Service for health care.
We believe in freedom. You have worked hard, you have earned money. You should be able to spend it the way you want to. You should be able to keep as much of it as possible. You should have the freedom to buy the health care you want, just as you should be able to buy the car you want. If you choose to waste your life away with booze and cigarettes, that is your choice, however unfortunate.
We believe in the inherent goodness of the American spirit. We believe that deep down, people want to do good. They want to be strong, healthy, prosperous. They want their families to be safe.
We want that for everyone.
