May you have nothing but aces in the everafter. So.. Mike Whitmarsh is (was?) my cousin. I never met him. He was from a part of my family that I never had contact with, which was not unusual. Aside from his rather cool life, he'd been sort of special to me because of something silly.
My parents just knew I was gonna be a boy, so they only had a boy name ready: Joshua Whitmarsh. Whitmarsh was a family name from the side of the family I never knew. When I arrived missing the required boy parts, I was nameless for 3 days until a sister picked something.
I'd always wanted to meet him, but based on his semi-famous career I didn't wanna just pop up and be all, "ohai! u dun know me, but i'm totally ur cuzzin!" Rob is a big volleyball fan with a history of playing/coaching, so I was feeling inspired to reach out and make the connection last year. I was surprised to learn that Mike lived here in San Diego with his wife, and I found phone numbers and addresses... but I couldn't get over the weird family stuff to make the call. Guess this is why it's not good to wait on stuff like this.
I'm really sad that he left this world so soon. I'm not sad about never having met him.. that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I'm just sad now for his family, his wife.. to lose someone so suddenly like that. I hope they find peace.
<3, cuzz..
