Yet another 36 hour shift at work yesterday. Why does the weird shit always happen on my duty days? One of the young squids(sailor) on the boat decided that he had a bad day yesterday. instead hitting someone like they normally do he decided to kill himself. How did he try this you ask, well he climbed to the top of the forward mast and jumped. No he did not succeed, he mearly feel to the next radar platform. Now as duty cop I have to climb up there, make sure he isn't dead, and try to negotiate him down. Due to the extreme nature of this i decide not to take the time to put on a safety harness and proceed to climb about 100 feet up from the main deck. when i get there i find the kid crying with a broken left leg. so spend about twenty minutes trying to console him and keep him from hurting himself or me. finally we get a medic and few others up there with us and try to figure out how to get him down. due to the hight lowering him via a rope was not an option. we finally decide to tie his boot as tight as possible and have him climb down the ladder while we have a safety harness strapped to him with two tending lines. after we finally got him down and on the way to the hospital i had the pleaser of going through a two hour debrief before starting my hours of paper work. the morale of this story is that some times you should just call in sick to work
