So again, 6:15 alarm and Chris was up to make breakfast for the kids: fried eggs on toast. He also proofed out the rustic sourdough, and baked that up. I made Paul's lunch, Maddy packed hers, dog was fed and walked, chickens released to forage, and kids on the bus by 7. Then, packed up the gym bags and made it in to the fitness center ( Read more... )

1) I'm trying to envision a voluntary 5k on an erg. :D
2) I never kept track of Torchwood eps by title, so I'm having a hard time following along at home. :)
3) Retiring ResNet what now?
4) I keep parsing Eduroam as "E'duro Am", like some kind of enduro race. :)

1) It's just enough to take the edge off. Displaced your aggression, lately?

2) Check. Will try to add a 5-word plot summary.

3) Oh yes. ResNet is dead and gone. No such service any longer. I PMPd that retirement last year. Kinda sad, really.

4) Edu-roam. Service that ships Wi-Fi authentications back to travelers' home institutions so they don't need to credential here.

1) Maybe it's because when I was rowing in HS and college, 2Ks kicked your ass (sub-6 minute, ideally sub-5), and 5Ks left you incapacitated (sub-20 minute, ideally sub-18), if done as the coach intended.

2) Huzzah!

3) Absorbed into the CIT HelpDesk, I presume?

4) Oh, I know--I figured out the proper parsing of the word early on, but my mind still wants to read it the other way. I'd have to see it capitalized EduRoam to think it properly. :D

1) If I don't feel like I wanna puke, I'm not working hard enough. So, today's 2K took my just shy of 10. 5Ks I like to hit in 25, but I'll allow 30. Usually because I run 3 miles on the treadmill first. And I'm 40. Oh, to have the body I had in college for just One. More. Day.

3) Oh heck, that (ResNet merging with HD) happened years ago. There hasn't been a separate ResNet team in easily five years, probably longer because memory is the first thing to go. No, no I mean the technology. I retired the ResNet databse, elimnated the DBAs positions. The service is gone. No ResNet web pages, nothing to register for when you move in. Caput.

1) I never like pushing myself hard enough to feel like puking--I can work plenty hard w/o reaching that point. :)

3) How's that work? There's gotta still be network service in the dorms--how can there not be a backend to administer it?

1) You're wise. Me, I need to get it all out. I've never been good at moderation. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Pain is weakness leaving your body. All that, yeah.

2) Ubiquitous Wi-Fi. They never even think of plugging in. Sure, we left the ports active, and if they do plug in (mostly printers, X-Boxes and the like) they have to register in DNSDB but it's the same campus DB as everywhere else. Just another net. Last year it was less than 30%, the number of wired registrations. This year, I think it will be even fewer. Nobody even thinks of jacking in anymore.

1) Yeah, definitely a moderation-based exerciser here. :) (Moderation in 'bout everything else, too!)

2) Well, that's a heck of a change. I remember the not-even-half-ass Red Rover service... (and no gamer worth their salt plays on wifi! ;)

Yeah, Rover grew up. 802.11.n, a few runs of fiber, and they see better connections on Wi-Fi than on the wired plant. Not everywhere. The newest dorms, down on west, they have gig to the desktop if you've got the NIC for it.
