So, last night proved the old addage about the night not being over until the sun comes up. After I posted my DearDiary entry for the night and went to bed, Chris went to get Maddy. Who was not in evidence, and called (waking me up) at some point. Then Chris called. Then we played find the teenager for a little while, and all ended well but for my being awake when I should be asleep. And so I hit Friday feeling really, really exhausted.
Up at 6:15 with the alarm, Chris made the kids' breakfast (I'd prepped muesli the night before, they love muesli). I crawled out of bed and made Paul's lunch, and Chris got them to the bus stop by 7. Including the fun part where Paul announces, "Oh, I need socks!" when we're supposed to be walking out the door two minutes ago. Then it was showers, chickens, dog walking and -- since it's Friday -- putting out the garbage and recycling at our house and at my mother's. We returned the rental truck from PA, and made it in to work at not-too-much-later-than-we-should despite the extra things to do.
In my other life, aka work, I continued to press on Cisco to do their firewall presentation and started assembling the team to come up with a solution for IT services and support for our NYC offices. I think many more trips to NYC are in my future. I made it back on the good diet and had a ThinkThin bar for lunch, and then had my annual performance review in the afternoon. It was arguably the most fair I've ever had. I've got a good gig these days, and it behooves me to remember that. Even the obligatory "things to work on in the coming year" section was true and well-intentioned. I dealt with a minor but frustrating issue from the digital signage release, namely where people who have production responsibilities were not doing them and Really Should Be, but I didn't let it harsh my mellow. My mother's computer was working again, so I had, oh, a dozen messages from her over the course of the day, but much easier to handle than when she phones.
Then it was time to pick up Chris and head home. Home, where the bourbon lives. We got home, Paul was already outside riding his bike, and Maddy was cleaning the kitchen (really well). I thought we were all going to go see her school musical (Lurking on the Railroad) tonight, but Chris was kinda spent for the week so I took her to call and came home. I needed to buy sugar on the way, but forgot my wallet, so that would wait. Luckily I remembered before I got to the check out! Chris went back out to take Maddy a permission slip and some hosiery, and buy sugar, while I made pierogies and bratwurst again. Yes, this is the third time we've had bratwurst and pierogies this week. A little odd I suppose. Maddy called a third time to ask if she could go to Friendly's after the play tonight. We consented, and saved ourselves having to go pick her up. Now we just have to stay awake to make sure she gets home safely at some point.
So, I'm downloading some Torchwood, because it's been a good day and I'm going to celebrate with Captain Jack. Oh yes, some Captain Jack.
