Ok Chris . . . semantics aside, GWB still opposed civil unions for same-sex couples as governor of Texas. So that's a strike against giving gay couples any sort of "couples" rights, let alone marriage.

And as for your comment as to "why can't people compartmentalize and go with logic instead of irrationality," I don't think gay couples are looking at marriage as just a way to get tax breaks, or other financial incentives. These are couples who are just as in love as any other married couple, who want to solidify their committment in the eyes of God and the law. And while GWB holds no power over the God aspect, he sure as hell does over the law . . . regardless of whether or not he has the power to implement the proposed amendment, he has much influence over the Congressmen who will vote for or against it.

This civil union thing is basically another form of "seperate but equal." As if we're saying something like, "Well you gay folks can't get married like the rest of normal Americans . . . but here's a little something you can do!!" If gay people are to be given the same rights as the rest of Americans and not be prejudiced against, or subject to the continuing stigma of being gay, then they ought to have the right to marry, just like you and I have.
