I don't think words can convey how un-excited about the whole New Year's Eve thing I am. I'm not a fan of enforced partying or merriment, nor am I fan of crowded bars, drunk assholes, and police checkpoints. I'm not a fan of the whole "This year I'm going to finally do X" thing either, because you won't. You'll wake up with a hangover and go about your business as usual. The shelf-life of resolutions is two weeks max.
Here's my year in review since I know you're all so excited about it: I had a great fucking year. I started off 2006 with no friends in the area, and was extremely disappointed in my job which was the whole reason I was in the area to begin with. Now I have a lot of great friends and I'm very happy with that I managed to accomplish professionally. There was way too much drama that cast a shadow over a year that would be otherwise perfect, but now that the persons responsible are no longer a part of my life, things can only go up from here.
Last night M. took me up to the city and we had dinner at
Farmer Brown, a soul food restaurant which was really good. I was especially happy with my macaroni and cheese and cornbread. And my pear brandy Sidecar. After that we headed over to
Bourbon and Branch which is a speakeasy. On the corner there is a large Anti-Saloon League sign, and to the right is an unmarked door, where you have to give a password. Unfortunately the password was not something awesome like "Raygun" or "Laser." The drinks were delicious, I started off with something fabulous containing Belvedere, pomegranate juice, and ginger and finished off with a mojito. I really liked the way the booths were set up, they were very small and intimate, not like most places where you feel like you're shouting across the table at the person you're with.
I just had a friend send me info that some
bombs went off in Bangkok, which is just super. I bought an $800 lens this morning.
