On the seriousness of the Hobby

Jun 17, 2009 00:58

Today I got notified that Csabi - one of my greatest friends and collaborators in the Hobby - got bitten by one of his rattlesnakes on Sunday, an animal that he had kept without the legal papers (albeit with sufficient professional knowledge, if not approach).

He's in hospital now, and thank God, the doctors agree on his survival. Yesterday, even saving his arm instead of amputating it seemed unlikely. He's likely to lose his job at the Zoo, though, his animals are about to be confiscated and terminated, and he has to pay about 400.000.- forints for the serum that has been administered to him (even the serum's availability in the country was due to lucky circumstances), not to mention the fine he has to pay. He is also yet to face the Hungarian terrarists' stares and opinions, which will probably differ, depending on the amount of the media coverage the case will get, and wether it will demonize terraristics in the public eye again or not.

We visited him in the hospital as soon as it was possible, and I saw that he could hardly look us in the eye, but after having talked to me and Dávid, he agreed on trying everything to keep the snakes, and continue where he left off. I know it is probably the luckiest way things have turned out, and I also have mixed feelings of morbid fascination and adoration towards the look in his eyes, his broken voice, and his decision.

I feel that me too has to be very, very careful in the future, and that I should never ever stop doing what we do, as it is a wonderful thing; keeping and breeding Life in its real, true, dangerous nature in a box.
