Haven't seen you for a few days. All's clear on this end.

Respond to this so I know you've not run into trouble, hm? There are a lot of newcomers and not all of them are trustworthy.

Yes, there are a lot of people on this ship who are untrustworthy.

... You figure Ace out already?

Ace? What's wrong with him? He's simply charming.

[No! Nonononono, back on track, back on track.]

I--I mean... wouldn't it just be awful if you trusted someone completely, gave them e-everything, and then they just betrayed you!

That would be a no, then. Talk to him, but don't trust him and especially don't follow him to that damn bee excursion or take a bet.

Not particularly. I'd say it depends entirely on whether they told you they would keep such information confidential.

**knock knock. Erol's leaning on the doorframe, one eyebrow cocked with patient expectation**

You're upset about something.

[Does he really think she meant that sort of betrayal? Of course he does, he's Erol, a military man, but it should still cross his mind--

The knock rouses her, and she panics for a moment or so. For some reason she hadn't anticipated this, had assumed they would clear it up over the comms - foolish, really, given the fact the conversation isn't even locked, but logic isn far from the first thing on her mind right now - so she's horribly tempted just to ignore him.

But no, it would be best if they could sort this out in person - preferrably without herself running fleeing the room in tears - and so the door is indeed opened.]

Yes, I am.

[Hopefully it won't be too obvious how much she's been crying over the few days, or if it is, it won't make her look weak.]

Uh-huh.

**He invites himself in and closes the door. She had been crying her little eyes out if he wasn't mistaken, and the last thing he needed was for someone to see them engaged in a dramatic argument.**

Anyone I shoould kill for you?

**He's quite certain that she's upset at him for some reason, but until she screws up the courage to say so he's going to treat her words at face value.**

[She hugs herself and leans against the door, eyes fixed firmly on the floor. If she makes eye contact with Erol now, she not sure if she can keep this up.]

N-no! No, no.

[He's going to make this difficult, isn't he? Wonderful. Now, how best to phrase--]

Evelyn tell me what happen.

[Why mouth, glad to see you told your good friend brain you've decided to stop listening to her.]

**Evelyn? If he'd spoken to her, he's forgotten.**

... And what happened?

**For once Erol isn't playing coy; he's really not certain what she could be thinking of.

Ugh, women.**

Cadence Wayward.

[She says this as if it should explain absolutely everything, and, hopefully, it will.]

Hmm.

**Cadence. Fellow psychopath, passion for Guinness, damn fine piece of round-ear. If the man ever came to his senses Erol would tap that in a second.**

Humor me. What is it about him you find objectionable?

**Erol understands some of Christine, but not all of her, and not enough to deduce what she finds upsetting about him and Cadence. Other people are so very strange sometimes.**

What he did. What you did.

[She can tell her has little, if any, idea what she's talking about, and that knowledge angers her almost as much as the act itself. For him to betray her like that... and then forget? Did he care that little?]

On Christmas Day.

**Erol's completely calm, almost flat.**

"What we did."

**He ticks items off on his fingers.**

We had a drink. Messed around. Had a difference of opinion. He left.

**Eyes her calmly, analyzing her reactions. Clearly this is a component of Christine's psyche he has yet to get a handle on, and it's fascinating. What's upsetting her?**

I fail to see how any of the above affects you. You weren't injured, nor was anyone you care about. I didn't tell him anything about you or betray any confidence.

How does what I did with /him/ hurt /you/?

**For clearly, she was hurt. Fascinating. Erol had never had anyone lay claim to him before, had precious little example of non-dysfunctional relationships and not enough social instinct to pick up on such concepts otherwise.

This was a missing jigsaw piece to his picture of how "normal" people worked, and he turned it around in his head, trying to place it.**

There no fidelity in Haven?

[He... he really doesn't understad, can't comprehend why this betrayal hurts her so, can't even understand how he's betrayed her. Will he even care, if she explains it, or is she just--

No, she can't let herself think like that if she wants to stay sane.

Is this how Erik felt? Little wonder he went insane. Love, grief, heartbreak, never-ending tears, and that glimmer of hope that prevents her from giving up... It's enough to send anyone mad.]

[Fidelity. Ah. Erol DID know what that was, though he'd never practiced it and had certainly no idea what led people to expect it. Oh, HE was possessive, he could extrapolate that perhaps others felt the same way; but for the most part this meant he would be upset if someone else hurt Christine, or tried to take her from him. So long as she belonged to him, he didn't much care what she did with her spare time.]

I wasn't aware fidelity was expected. Never said I would.

[If Christine thinks she can tie him down to one bed she's sorely mistaken. This little arrangement - whatever it is - does NOT change who he is or what he does. Especially if she never fucking told him what she expected in the first place.

Of course if she had, he'd have laughed and said no.]

[That stings, but not as much as it could have, because deep down she knows he has a point. But then, even if she had made it clear she expected fidelity, would it have made any difference? Would she still just be one of the many in Erol's bed?]

So I just a whore to you? That it?

[There, she's said it, admitted it. He's going to say yes, she knows he is. She's conveniently innocent and loving, so he sleeps with her when it suits him. The occasional affection is just because she's lucky.

Now this? This hurts, makes her feel as if her heart is being ripped to shreds - and by his hands. She prays she won't cry in front of him.]

[Erol's anger flares. He should laugh, should tell her it's true. To some degree it is - all women are whores, yes?

When he started this he'd have agreed without a second thought, but it's not second thoughts that make his eyes flash now. No, it's his first reaction, his gut reaction.

He grabs her by the arm and hauls her close, heedless of his own strength. His voice by contrast is low and steady. This is a dangerous sign.]

Just a whore.

I saw your dead body and I took on a nine-foot tall walking monstrosity of death and decay because he'd killed you. I slit his foul belly open before he sliced me in half. I died because he DARED to touch you ( ... )
