green cleaning: bring on the mundane

Feb 13, 2010 11:11

While our usage of household chemicals is fairly low, I'd like to phase it out altogether using a combination of natural products and elbow grease, hence the following list.

Ones I've stumbled upon:

- teaspoon of bread soda and some hot water for persistent tea or coffee stains in mugs: leave it for a bit and then scrub out as normal

- lemon juice to freshen up the dishwasher: about half a lemon's worth into an empty load or in with dishes as a matter of course

Ones I've yet to try:

- cleaning the windows with vinegar and newspaper(?)

- vinegar to descale the kettle

- cleaning the drains (keeping them clear) with a cup of bread soda and vinegar

Ones that haven't quite worked (suggestions welcome):

- a saucer or eggcup full of bread soda in the fridge to deodorise it

Things for which I've no ideas for green cleaning:

- cleaning the oven

- limescale

- unblocking drains or keeping them clear (we don't put food or whatever down them as a matter of course, but they still do get bunged up)
