The Violent Femmes just rocked my socks off. Completely off. And they were the Batman socks.
They played for two solid hours, backed up by Horns of Dilemma (YESSSSSSSSSS), with the Staggering Statistics (from Cincinnati! featuring an Afghan Whig!!) opening.
They brought the mosh. They brought the weird instruments. They brought a conch shell.
They played "Jesus Walking on the Water" (MBL: See? I told my mom I was going to church tonight!). "Black Girls." "Gimmee the Car." They played "I Held Her In My Arms" and "Gone Daddy Gone." During "Add It Up," I got kicked in the head by crowdsurfers three times (which is remarkable only in that there pretty much only seemed to be crowdsurfing during this one song). THEN THEY CAME BACK AND PLAYED "Kiss Off" as part of their encore.
(Yeah, and they played "Blister in the Sun," but that sort of went without saying, I suppose.)
I know I had better stuff to say about this show, but right now my ears are ringing a bit and I smell like an ashtray and I can't really figure out what else was supposed to go here. MBL says she moshed off five years of her life. Matthew points out that she probably would've spent them in a rocking chair anyway.
Some girl who was standing by me with two of her friends who kept making out and being annoying realized, when the three of them got beers, that the beers *would* be spilled. She turned to me and said, "Okay, I know this is going to be spalshy, and I want to apologize in advance if I splash on you... but at least you're wearing black, right?"
Still happening to be in a certain stolen Foo Fighters shirt, I said, "Hey, don't worry, it's not even mine. It's my boyfriend's."
This resulted in a high five, and later? She spilled her beer on Matthew.
Ahahahahhaha.
