F**k That S**t

After hearing Kloq might be supporting, and after hearing the new album (which I've been playing on repeat all week), I decided to give Combichrist a second chance live. They were pretty boring when I saw them in America, and towards the end of their set it became a bit annoying and embarrassing. They brought nothing new to their material, and Andy barely did anything apart from pace and sing the samples. The only highlights were Blut Royale and Get Your Body Beat which did work live, and the drummers were amazing to watch.

Since then I've listened to them less. Everyone's told me how great they are live. Maybe we caught them on an off night? I had to give them a second chance I suppose. I really like their material on CD and in clubs.. and the new stuff sounded like it really wanted to be performed live as opposed to their older title tracks which were just aimed for the dancefloor.

We arrived just in time for Northbourne.. who were ok, if not a little dull. The Icon of Coil track was nice but apart from that we kinda forgot they were there quite quickly. I give em 5/10.. add more vocals/samples/melody and it could be great. Reaper didn't really blow me away like most people claim they do. While I kinda got into them a bit more than at Infest.. they just didn't really do much for me. I give em 4/10.

Then on came Combichrist, and I was up at the front and really ready for a great show. First thing I noticed was there were considerably fewer guys on stage. As far as I remember there were 3 or 4 synth guys, and I'm sure there were 3 drummers, and they sounded exactly the same as last time pretty much.. hmmm! Anyway, we quickly became irritated by the idiots at the front around us (I really, REALLY cant wait till cigarettes are banned!), and decided to move further back.. seems the whole place was full of cretins though so we just had to put up with it! The band did seem to have a bit more about them this time, and Andy did seem to interact with the crowd much more. The new stuff works live, but I'm sorry, the old stuff just doesn't! Apart from Blut Royale the older stuff was just pointless, and in some cases, embarrassing. The crowd really seemed to love em though, so maybe it was just us.. maybe we don't get it?

We had to leave for This Shit Will Fuck You Up.. it was embarrassing in America but we had to wait for KMFDM. This time we could escape thank God! It was like some bad 2-Unlimited rap. Don't get me wrong.. I like the track. If it comes on in a club I'll probably dance, but watching it live is something I never wish to experience again.

So yeah, they were better, but I'll make sure to avoid them live again. Speaking to people afterwards it was nice to find quite a few people that thought the same too.. people either thought they were absolutely amazing or pretty poor. I'll give em 6/10 for Red, Blut Royale, Electrohead and Get Your Body Beat. 4/10 for the rest.

"Super Syn" was enjoyable, and the music was pretty damn good! We got a bit tired though, so much of the night was spent sitting in the dark seated bit or watching the rather entertaining dancefloor. On the whole it wasnt a bad night.. Syn made up for the disappointing bands in the end! =)

But something that does excite me, and for some reason I'm not supposed to say, even though it does seem to be confirmed now? I know loads of people heard rumours of this band maybe playing Corp, and people probably already know anyway. If not, all I'll say is to check said bands MySpace *cough* and now I hope Solitary Experiments and Modulate also play somewhere more accessible! *cough* ;-)
