The raging environmentalist

I'm an angry environmentalist.  I burn with the fire of a thousand suns when I see people littering, or even if I see someone dare to throw a piece of white paper in the regular trash at work.  I can't really pinpoint when this obsession of mine first came about.  I guess it's a combination of having always loved the outdoors and nature, having watched Fern Gully and read Silent Spring and majoring in Landscape Architecture... though I was like this before I went back to school.

I tend to feel really guilty about not doing more to save the planet.  I know I can't save the planet all by myself.  Not to mention that the planet might not want to be saved.  Maybe the planet is planning to clean itself up with a series of earthquakes and floods and start all over with a less disgusting species at the top of the food chain.

So anyway.  I'm making a list to remind myself of what I do that is good, even if it is small.

Things I do to help Mama Earth:

Recycle (including collecting recycling from work and bringing it to the recycling place myself).
Cloth napkins instead of paper. (And got Dave using them too!)
Using the Diva cup (5 years now, baby!)
My own drink bottles instead of buying bottled water or iced tea.
Refuse to buy cheap, disposable crap that will end up getting thrown out too soon.
Use a worm bin for my food scraps.

Things I could do but haven't yet:

Use container for sandwiches and snacks instead of baggies.
Use cloth MORE... like using towels or rags instead of paper towels.
Stop taking 20 minute showers.
Use my own bags instead of plastic at stores... though I'm not sure what to use for garbage bags if we do that.

Things I'd like to do but am not quite ready to do yet:

Move to the country and grow my own food and be less reliant on grocery stores, etc.
Be buried naturally when I die.  (Obvi not ready to do that one yet... haha)

Things I'll probably never do... but maybe:

Get rid of my car and get everywhere on foot or by bike.  This wouldn't work unless I lived really close to a town and worked in the same town.

Well that's all I can think of for the moment.   I should probably do some work now, since I am at work...
