Time has been flying. Don't really feel like trying to recap much, overall I'm very satisfied with how my life is going. occams_scissors is the best friend (and wife) I could have ever had and I'm glad she's by my side throughout this surrealistic journey we call life ( Read more... )

Yeah - it's the traditions I like. The lights, the colors, the tree, the religious cermonies, the stories (birth of Christ, yule log, St. Nicholas, Santa, Rudolph, Christmas Vacation (HA!), the music (but only in December, any earlier is death on wheels for me. Christmas is a religious holiday for me, but also a neat blending of other stuff, including traditions from beliefs like yours. The season, if not totally destroyed by consumerism, can be really "old world" and be a nice thing to experience. I really dig Greenfield Village's holiday set up. Ever been out there?

I know what you are saying about all the other nonsense. I can't stand it either. THe other day Mare and I went to Meijers just to pick up some groceries and I jsut couldn't take it. It literally made me angry just being there. Something about the happy music and bright decorations in contrast to the pushing and shoving and greed and nastiness is like a vision of hell. It really sucks. If I could do Christmas as just a few days of neat music, one grand church ceremony, a day at home with family and one really personal, even hand made or well thought out gift a piece, I'd be much happier with the holiday. As it is, Christmas has become very Americanized and by that I mean it's a marketing savvy, consumer's paradise. Yuck. No wonder people are all stressed.

Yeah, the consumerism and overall fake way people act this time of year just really wreck it for me. I don't think I could handle Greenfield Villages holiday set up... I think I'd have to go postal, but thats just me >grins< (even though the museum and village any other time of year are AWESOME). The relatives on both mine and OS's sides of the family all decorate and such so we look at it as getting our fix of it when we visit and not having to set it all up or take it down and store it when the holiday is over... hehe.

My business partner, Aric pretty much feels the way you do I think. He really hates most of it. His Mom used to stress everyone out every Christmas because she had to have the decorations just perfect. The house had to be better decoreated than the neighbor's house. The food had to be the best EVER. And so on and so forth. I can see why he no longer is interested in "celebrating". My Mom was like that too, to some extent. But fortunately I decided that I would take to heart the things I liked from what we did and what others did and just celebrate Christmas in that way. I'll tell you this much, my kids will love it, because I will never make them feel all stressed about gifts, and decorations and all that stuff.
