Aeryn’s so-very-thoughtful pentak jab, Callisto slept through Saturday. It wasn’t particularly restful sleep, but it was, nevertheless, sleep.
Of course sleeping eventually led to dreaming…
The girl crouched behind the doorway, half in the shadows, listening to her parent’s voices."I don’t like this."
"You thnk I do? What other choice do we have?"
"Fight and die. Or run and die." Sneaking a glance around the door frame, she could see the mother rubbing her arms and shaking her head. "But trusting that you can buy the mercy of a warlord? Especially one with that reputation?"
"Her reputation also includes sparing the women and children." Her father slid his arms around her mother’s waist and pulled her closer to him. "I know it’s not much, but if this goes wrong…"
"I’d prefer to be out there with you. Not trusting on someone's reputation to keep me safe."
He laughed then, a full and rich sound. "I'd rather you there too. But we’re trying to come across as harmless. No one will believe that with you there."
"Are you trying to tell me you want to spend the rest of the season at your brother’s house?"
"No, just that one look at you and any warlord in their right mind would know they’d met their match. I know I did."
"When did you become a warlord?"
"If we didn’t have an audience, I’d show you right now."
"Audience?"
"Take a guess."
"Callisto." The girl squeaked and scuttled back. "Callisto."
She warily poked her head around the doorframe. "Yes, Mama?"
"You wanted something?"
"I just wanted, to know,” she said, licking her lips nervously. “If I could go with Papa."
"No."
"But-"
"I said no!" He snapped before lowering his voice. "I need to you to say somewhere safe."
"But you said nowhere was safe," she pointed out.
Her father rubbed his eyes. "Safer." He reached out to ruffle her hair. "Promise me you’ll stay somewhere safer."
She nodded solemnly then frowned as she felt cold hands on her shoulders. "Mama? Your hands, they’re..." She looked down to see livid red blisters covering her mother's hands. "Burnt." Mouth suddenly dry, she started looking up...
Unfortunately, when you push yourself near the point total physical exhaustion, it can be hard to wake yourself up. As Callisto was now learning.
[ooc: open for interaction, but I'm afk for the next couple of hours so slowplay is love]
