So the general theme of existence right now is that a boy is a lovely thing to have, and so is sleep. Ironically enough I sleep better with Sean in my life, but I've lost the ability to sleep the entired blessed day long on Saturday, so I'm not sure how things are evening out overall. He has a CAR, people! This means that we can go on amazing nerd vacations to nearby metropolii on weekends and thus I am slowly meeting everyone in the Cam. However, our tendency to travel to games that end at midnight on Saturday, with a certain redhaired liturgical rockstar who has work to do on Sunday mornings is starting to take more of a toll than the Jersey Turnpike. Oh yeah. Topical humor.
Now for cuts, to save your flists.
Well, I was trying to read the Codex Aleria, a new fantasy series by Jim Butcher of Harry Dresden fame, I've come to realize that I just have a lot of trouble reading his books. I like them, I like the world and the characters and the plot, but there comes a time, every time, about two thirds of the way in, that I just get mired down and start casting about for something else to occupy myself with. Jim Butcher does this thing, you see, where things start out pretty much okay in the books, and then things get a little worse. And then the process of fixing those things makes other things worse. And then those things come back and get into a fight with the first things, and someone ends up in the hospital, and someone else (usually the hero) tries to sacrifice himself so that the day will be saved, and then it is saved, and whew wasn't that hell to go through but we're all much more badass/noble now because of it.
Now, I recognize that this is the plot arc of most books anyway, but somehow on Butcher I just give up on caring how exactly things are going to get worse this time, and who is going to end up killed or in the hospital this time, and how the hero is going to make an unbelievable sacrifice and pull through by the sheer strength of his shorthairs this time. It's why I stopped reading Harry Dresden, and darn it, I've stopped reading Codex Aleria too. I wish I could care more, Jim Butcher, but I already know exactly what you're going to put me through, and China Mieville just does it better. So I went and re-read Perdito and the Scar instead. Nom nom.
9:30 AM is usually the most boring time in the world. NO ONE IS AWAKE. Nothing to do but listings. However, this morning we are experiencing a special new kind of fuckery here at the office. I've mentioned before that while my individual coworkers are pleasant, the company I work for is pretty far to the left on the soulless vs caring scale. The latest shenanigans involve them dropping their contract with the temp agency because another agency underbid Headway. I'll say that again: the main office in Ohio or wherethefuckever has dropped the agency that the New York office has used exclusively to get their temps for years now, which is the same temp agency that I've been using off and on whenever I need work.
Now, the trick they're pulling is to tell us temps that we are not losing our jobs over this - instead we are going to get the same pay and hours, but we are going to sign on with this other company and get paid through them. This other company is also based in Ohio and has no New York office. So they're basically poaching temps from Headway for their own use, but what I want to know is what is the office going to do when/if its present temps leave? NewTempCompany doesn't have a recruiting office in NYC, and there ain't a chance in hell that they'll bus temps in from Ohio to sit here and do my job. The logical conclusion is that, as we leave, we are not going to be replaced, which will leave the office here even more understaffed. This doesn't seem to have occurred to anyone else here yet, so...it'll be interesting to see if anyone picks up on this latest piece of evidence that not only does the company not care about it's business partners, it doesn't care about its own offices either.
So now I'm filling out NewTempCompany's online application, and it's doing that retarded thing where it lets you upload your resume, and then makes you go through and copypaste it in all over again anyway. Please see the icon for this post for my general response to this bullshit.
