Chapter 5: The Ringer
1. In addition to The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 5, and other fifth-year versions of books they'd already been studying for the previous four years, Harry and Hermione also needed Taking the O.W.L.s: Preparing Yourself for the Worst Experience of Your Life, by Eglantine Etude. Fred and George gave Ron the copy they’d used (they had shared it) and this year they were going to share Percy's old copy of Taking the Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests (N.E.W.T.s): And You Thought the O.W.L.s Were Bad, again by Eglantine Etude.
Making up names for wizarding textbooks is another truly fun activity. I'm sure JKR enjoyed this, too!
2. Ron was still staring at his unwrapped Nimbus 2001, open mouthed. "I've never had a new broom before..."
So even though in OotP Ron's new broom was for being a prefect, I just realized that JKR and I still gave him his first new broom just before his fifth year! (And from family members!)
3. He calmly gave the waitress five gold Galleons; he wanted to leave her a generous tip after what Fred and George had put her through. Bill, meantime, had gotten her name so he could owl her.
I have to say, Bill and Fleur making eyes at each other before the final task of the tournament never struck me as foreshadowing for Bill/Fleur. It just seemed like they both appreciated how pretty the other was. ;) However, once it was mentioned in OotP that they were seeing each other ("English lessons") that did seem like foreshadowing for it to develop further, as it did.
4. Called two other things: Ron being a good Keeper and Ginny being a good Seeker. (Although, yeah, Harry should have caught the Snitch as many times as she did. Hindsight.)
5. Harry being Quidditch captain--not until his sixth year, it turns out.
That was another short one, but I promise Chapter Six is longer!
