Dick Cheney: Winner for most Voldemort-like official

Jul 08, 2007 20:41

All kinds of stuff is going on with me at the moment, but I couldn't resist sharing this:

While searching the Washington Post site using "Harry Potter" for the search parameters (I was looking for a particular article and haven't yet found it) I found this little snippet in the search results:

66. White House Briefing : No Checks, No Balances -- No Supervision?
Dan Froomkin (washingtonpost.com)

...subscription required): "It's hard to imagine how Dick Cheney could get more dastardly, unless J. K. Rowling has him knock off Harry Potter next month...."I've always thought Cheney was way out there -- the most Voldemort-like official I've run across. But even...

I'm trying to stop laughing long enough to type. ;)

ETA: In case you're interested, 118 articles have appeared in the Post in the last 60 days with the phrase "Harry Potter" in them (that's very close to two stories per day), including one in which the address "212 1/2" is considered to be a Harry Potter-type address for some reason (I've seen that sort of address for a long time before the Potter books) and another in which it is noted that three cheetahs at the National Zoo have been named for Harry Potter characters: Draco, Granger and Zabini are the cheetahs' names. (Plus, of course, an article about a batty clergyman named Burke who is trying to bring his flock in line and pound the "fact" into their heads that the Harry Potter books are irreligious, even though they are anything BUT.) A lot of the articles are about the film, loads are about the new book, and a handful are even about the poor kidnapped little girl, Madeleine McCann, whose ransom has been contributed to by JK Rowling and Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Atlantic Airlines, among others.

But I still didn't find the article I was looking for...

voldemort, harry potter, dick cheney
