They could end up pretending to be students to cover up their real activities. To aid in this fiction, McGonagall could appoint Ron and Hermione Head Boy and Girl. But they won't be students in the traditional sense--they will be away from the castle too frequently for that. Harry won't be captain of Quidditch or play any matches, though.

Ooh! I like this idea.

but... can't he play Quidditch just so he can be in his Quidditch uniform when Voldie and snakes attack the school - in a thunderstorm - and he is all wet and muddy and talking Parseltongue....

Yeah. I knew this guy in college who I could just watch him walk away from me forever. It looked particularly nice in basketball shorts.
