"What is it? What's wrong?" Jackie realized she'd been staring from the moment she entered sickbay again, forgetting to mask what she'd been thinking behind her eyes. Christine had caught it, those nursing skills were sharp. Blinking, she looked away. "Nothing, I..."
It wasn't like she could tell her what she'd seen. The device on the last planet they'd visited. Orders from the Captain, nobody was to say anything. It was locked up tight in classified reports to Starfleet. But that didn't mean Jackie could lock it away or forget standing in the middle of a battlefield....
She'd gotten separated from the away team after the device had sent them forward in time. Running as fast as she could towards what she hoped was the good guys line of defense. Diving into a trench as another plasma bomb went off, showering dirt over everyone within range...mostly the dead. Jackie had crawled along, trying to find someone, anyone familiar. But she wasn't ready for when she did.
A nurse laying against one side of the trench, looking alot older than Jackie remembered. Shrapnel hits in various places, one large piece lodged in her stomach. She looked up with slightly glazed eyes at the young girl who was kneeling next to her to take her hand, fighting back tears. "....C-chris is that you?" The older lady nodded slightly and then winced from the effort. "Don't try to move, I'll...I'll get help...." Though she could already tell there wasn't much she could do at this point. It couldn't be. It couldn't end like this. "It's not fair," Jackie said, not realizing she said it aloud. "Not here, not like this." Chris seemed to understand this too. Moving Jackie's hand to the side, she put it on the soldier next to her who was unconscious but still breathing. "Make..." she paused for a breath. "...make sure he....gets help...." Jackie swallowed, nodding. "I promise." Christine smiled and squeezed her hand once more....before she was gone. Jackie couldn't stop the tears then. But the bombs were getting closer, no time for crying. She kissed her friend's forehead as a goodbye and then hoisted the young soldier up to carry him towards the medic tent on the other side of the field.
"Nothing, I...I'm just tired from our last mission, that's all." Jackie tried to smile and left before Chris could question her further. As she entered the turbolift, she kept asking herself, what do you do if you saw your friend die...and it hadn't happened yet?
