summer reading

i just finished reading the two-act play "the night thoreau spent in jail" by robert edwin lee and jerome lawrence. has anyone else read this?

The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail

i loved it. it made me want to pull out those transcendentalists again. how do we let ourselves forget such poignant dogmas?

today as i was passing out summer reading books to sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school, i realized how much i miss such an assignment in my life. i miss the feeling of holding a handful of books knowing i was allowed and even expected to read them. i miss knowing i would be held responsible for my comprehension of what was inside those covers; and not being a bit afraid i wouldn't get through those texts. i'm a geek, i know.

i still haven't been able to make my way through most of "leaves of grass", no matter how many times i lose and have to re-buy the collection. i don't have much patience for poems that run over a page or so, and that's my fault. i'm spoiled being reared on brief, gut-punching poets who don't waste time and are concerned with the economy of words.

what are you reading this summer?
