# 13. Peranakans

Credits to Jooli.com for this Peranakan Nyonya doll picture. :)

There are times that I wished I was not born a Malay. Not that I am not proud being born a Malay, I am okay. I am proud of my Malay heritage and believe me, I am still attracted to old malay music especially Keroncong. :) And hey, still a big fan of P.Ramlee old and nostalgic movies. I do admit that I am not very Malay-fied and don't have strong passion or interest on Malay stuffs but at heart, I am still proud of the fact that I am a Malay and born one.

Today has been like any other days when I see chinese ladies married to a muslim family and settling down, embracing comfortably her new life as a Muslim. I just have this weird envy in me. I mean, wouldn't it be cool and overwhelmingly mind blowing experience to be introduced to a new culture, new religion, be a part of it and embrace it with open arms? I want to experience that kind of experience too! (which is a reason why, I am strongly for inter racial marriage) hahaha, weird I know.

Clearly, I wished that I was born a full time chinese or a full time peranakan chinese like Audra. I find peranakans really cool. I want to find a Peranakan man to be my husband. :p Their culture and heritage are more than just cool. Their cuisines are lovely. I totally dig their Penang Assam Laksa and kuihs too! Of course, their Nonya Kebaya(s) plus their sequins and beads shoes are more than just pretty items to look at.

Honestly, I have a vague knowledge of the Peranakans heritage and culture despite of the fact that daddy did tell me all about them when I was very young probably when I was 4-5 years old because I was a huge fan of this Baba and Nyonya show. I want to know more about Peranakans! I want to go on a trip to Katong and visit those Peranakan shops that sell the Nonya Kebaya and Kasut Manik! So if you are a Peranakan and like me, you don't really know (very) well about your own culture or you are a peranakan and you know (very) (very) (very) (very) (very) well about your own culture and don't mind taking me on a tour on your own culture, tell me okay? Leave me an email here! We'll set a date and go on a tour to find out more about your rich and cool Peranakan culture! Trust me, I will be on all ears and my eyes will be wide wide open on top of that, my mind will be open to learn and understand more of your culture. Promise! I will be waiting! ;)

For now, I shall continue to dream and pray and wish that I will find a Peranakan chinese man to be my husband to introduce to me to his Peranakan world and let me introduce my Malay and Islam world to him. :)

Love,
A.
