thank you kind sir! and i'm in the midst of journaling back through your (and all of the other spawning friends of mine from the past year's) journals for things to watch out for, so not only do i look forward to your future posts, i also look forward to your past too!
I've been saying for a while that I didn't believe "normal" families existed, until I met John's. I still think there must be some sort of mild hallucination going on in my head any time I really think about them--an honest-to-goodness nuclear family, with parents, 20's age children, and teenage children who ALL GET ALONG! Granted none of them are female teenagers, but the concept is still applicable.
I certainly didn't get along with my mother, but I had a lot of good reason. No, it wasn't all teenage gothiness. (The years of therapy helped.) I can't really speak for many others, but I do think I've known some teenage girls who got along with parents, in company anyway. Who knows what they're like when visitors aren't around.
i was never one of those "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!!" kind of kids, and in fact i was probably more uncomfortable around peers than i was around my parents--but all the same, i was one neurotic-ass teenager (post-teenager too, for that matter) and as such this scene is so oddly fascinating to me...
of course i wonder how things really are when visitors aren't around, but i just can't believe there's some sinister edge--you can't squeal the way they did and be sinister at the same time...
Great journal, mang. Can't wait to see X, Y, and Z. Just some notes on the "Delta" entry...
Not a new airplane, but a new seat layout... A few years ago they started converting all their 777s to a 3-3-3 configuration. Definitely nicer overall than their previous 2-5-2 layout. Most airlines will probably equip the plane we're working on now in a 2-4-2 layout, which should be pretty nice, you'll never be more than one person away from reaching the aisle.
As far as the route, that's actually pretty close to the shortest possible course. Great circle route and all that, a straight line on the globe looks like an arc when projected on a standard mercator map.
hey, this is japan we're talking about, y & z will be packed with good stuff! although x will probably have to wait until i travel to, uhh, greece or somewhere...
2-4-2 does sound like an ideal arrangement--we picked the middle aisle for this trip since S (who i guess you've never met, but she's my wife & yes she does have more than one letter in her name) had to do a lot of those "pregnant" things (get up and walk around, go to the bathroom, etc) at the expense of me doing my customary glances out the window saying things like "hey, its the pacific ocean!" and "hey, its still the pacific ocean!"
i guess you're right, we weren't in the air that much longer than we normally are--maybe its just the knowledge of knowing how much ground we're covering...we flew back straight over the pacific but it didn't give us a good comparison since we had the jetstreams and all--for that matter, i had smuggled some good strong wine onto the return flight and we could've flown across the indian ocean & i probably wouldn't have known the difference
