yeah, she has an appreciation for some world music - the Thai thing I put on my 2007 mix still gets sung pretty regularly.

Oh, I have no problem with exposing her to things like the Dead. I've exposed her to far worse - she started dancing to "Sex Machine" by the time she was 7 months old...I'll have to look into that.

But I am thinking now of making a mix - "Effervescent Elepahnt" is so obvious I wonder why I didn't think of that before! Beatles songs have proven to be a hit around here too - once I started vocally imitating sitar sounds, "Strawberry Fields Forever" became her favorite song.

As I mention in another comment, I used to think that "childrens music" was just a marketing ploy, thinking "how can they really tell the difference?" Provided you're not playing anything in 7/4 time or singing something in a death-metal cthulu voice (or who knows, maybe kids might like the latter). But she's gradually turned away from my music, not wanting to hear it in the car anymore, only to really respond to "her music". Perhaps its the daycare thing, but she's no longer content just to sing the songs, she wants to hear them (and me banging it out on my guitar is no consolation).

The thing is just that I can't stand people banging out something on a Casio SK-1 equivalent and then hawking it for $15 45 minutes later. But there's very little quality control outlets out there that I can assess, so posts like these are great. I imagine if she follows my path that by the time she gets 3 she'll be hauling out our own records & CDs so I'm expecting this to be somewhat transitional but nonetheless its the priority at the moment.

Oh, and I just recalled Ella Jenkins, who we used to play on WREK - she was an educational teacher who released a bunch of albums on the Folkways label in the 60s that the Smithsonian has reissued. Her stuff always seemed to be a good for all ages thing...

Ah, A-chan is telling me she's hungry, so best that I go now. Thanks for everything!
