I'm still in my first year of classes, but I was wondering if anyone knew the steps towards becoming a sex psychologist/therapist. As in, are there schools that specialize in this area, or even common classes? Thanks! :)

My Human Sexuality professor [who was a sex therapist] told us that there is no actual certification for becoming a "sex therapist" - pretty much anyone can call themselves that. Though I live in Minneapolis so this might just be a state thing, but... I dunno. I think his PhD was in clinical psychology but he focused on sex issues in practice.

You're only likely to find "psych of sex" type courses at institutions that happen to have an academic that specialises in that area. There is one of those at my university who occasionally teaches specifically on that subject (she lectures more broadly on social psych most of the time), but it's only a matter of luck that she's at my institution ( ... )

The only state that currently offers a license for sex therapy is Florida.

I worked as a research assistant with one of my professor's with his Human Sexual Behavior survey. THis was two years of the best experience I've had! My professor suggested I get involved with the local Rape crisis center. Wow. It changed my life and helped focus my studies. You'll find that the majority of courses will probably come from a medical school. A great place to start, since you'll need to know what the normal functioning is before you can deal with the different aspects that take place in society. Of course one of the best routes would be to go see a practicing clinical psy who deals with human sexuality and ask for advice.
I wish you well.

My understanding is that although there are many routes, one primary one would be to take the family therapy route and specialize in relationships and sex therapy.

What made you interested in this area?
