September 1, 2016
As we speak, I am watching my students write/draw a response to a video about being a global citizen. Our unit is about belief systems and the idea is to have the kids explore what it means to be a respectful global citizen and how understanding someone’s belief system can help them connect with others more easily and productively. You can imagine that this is a very deep and interesting unit. The kids haven’t quite connected this to real-world applications yet. Then again, we just started the unit on Monday. We will be focusing on belief systems of the class, as well as other people that we know. Yet they are having trouble respecting the beliefs of other people in the class and really listening to others’ opinions. I have my work cut out for me. This first few weeks of school (and first month in Beijing) have been kind of a whirlwind and I can’t believe it’s already September! I also can’t believe it’s been so long since I’ve done a blog post (5 years is a looong time!). Since I’m on this new journey in Beijing, I’ve decided to do a blog post about my journey (hopefully) once each week. It will be both personal and professional, depending on what happens that week. I’ll write again this weekend about more personal things that have been happening with me and reflect on how I’m adjusting to life in Beijing.
Until next time,
Nikki :)
