we totally do--I probably should have included pics with this entry, but I figured everyone reading it would probably already know what I was talking about.

Glad you liked :)

I think I had... some sort of idea about something like that at some point? Shit, now I gotta go dig through Gdocs to see if I can find it. I'm sure I had Underground Resistance Fighters around there SOMEWHERE... >.>

dude, if you do, share that sucker! if not, so going on the necessary gdocs list (can you internally link to other gdocs within a doc? be cool if, as stories gain traction, they can be spun off but still linked to that)

We could maybe post a share link in the Necessary Fics doc? Assuming everyone has access to the Doc being linked to, it should work ( ... )

Also, the military coat actually kind of makes me want Temeraire AU. Which is more dragonriders and Miz and I need to write our FIRST dragonriders fic before I could think about working on more, but JFC CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE HIM IN THAT OUTFIT STANDING NEXT TO A DRAGON IN AN AWESOME STEAMPUNK WORLD OR SOMETHING? YES I THINK YOU CAN. MORE OF ALL OF THIS. DRAGONS. STEAMPUNK. EVERYTHING. \0/

DUDE, ask PC to talk to you about steampunk!verse :D

as for the other, are you talking about the solar king myth? Every seven years, someone is "elected" king, fed, shown a great time, then taken out the back and ritually killed (some think the method of execution led later to the practice of hang, draw and quarter, but you can also have things like the Ledlowe man) - their blood brings back the sun and makes the crops grow.

Is Nick elected after a really bad winter (he's special! Take our extra tasty sacrifice please) and his bros are all "HELL NO" and make contact with the resistance (who have SCIENCE!) and off they go...

Yeah, something like that! I hadn't picked a particular sacrifice myth/ritual, but then, they're all fairly similar--sacrifice is made to ensure good harvests, no droughts or famines, etc etc.

But YES, I love the idea that they have SCIENCE! \0/ That's awesome. Maybe they've got, like, the steampunk-style tech that the People In Charge do not like? But they don't believe in the Religion or whatever, or at least don't follow it like everyone else, so Joe and Kevin steal Nick away and join the Resistance. =D

oooh yes! The mainstream stuck with religion and the Enlightenment didn't happen on a mass scale but was grounds for heresy. But they stuck with it, and so now you have the majority still following the rules of the fertility cult and a minority going "wait! the seasons are a product of the movement of planetary bodies in elipses! you don't need to sacrifice folk."

to which the common response is ~stab~

Yes! Like, if the Illuminati were real or whatever. The scientists were forced underground by the leaders of the Religion. Which I'm thinking is more Greco-Roman than Christian; like a world where Christianity never took hold, so there's still a pantheon, etc? Or maybe I should just make up a whole new religion that took off INSTEAD of Christianity? Like a return to the "barbarian" gods because the various Gothic tribes and perhaps the Huns sacked Rome but Christianity didn't exist and hadn't spread outward so you end up with this amalgamation of Greco-Roman/Hunnic religion (Tengriism?), but with a sort of "ruling body" that becomes as powerful as the Catholic Church was during the middle ages.

But you have this group that's like, Okay, worship the gods, that's cool and all, but WE REALLY DON'T NEED TO SACRIFICE PEOPLE! REALLY!! D= And they do their best to keep all of this knowledge that would otherwise be lost, etc. So they're very awesome! But yeah, if they get caught, there would be stabbing happening. >.>;;;

during the expansion period, it was more merger than invasion, so every region has its local gods but there's kind of these Superstars of the Pantheon thing going on that everyone acknowledges. And yes, power is invested in a kind of Council of Inquiry who are handy with stakes and bonfires :D

being found to own a book other than an approved (relgiious) texts is grounds for being strung up or burnt

Exactly! the Council was formed as the Empire expanded and absorbed various smaller tribes and eventually merged with smaller empires, and they introduced their own gods but allowed the people to continue worshipping their local deities, so every region has their specific gods (and you can tell what area of the Empire someone is from by the gods they pray to and the various insignia and talismans they carry with them, maybe?), but there are also the Pantheon who are the gods EVERYONE worships. (And, of course, if a local religion would go against the teachings of the Council, THOSE traditions are stamped out, so most local religions have been adapted to fit with the Pantheonic religion.)

But the Resistance has BOOKS! And they teach the boys how to READ and WRITE and how to BUILD THINGS and all sorts of amazing stuff they never even HEARD of while they were living in the Empire!
