What are zombies? Specifically, are they alive or are they somehow just animated corpses? If they are animated corpses, where does the energy needed to move around and freak out come from? Presumably food is required for their sustained existence/comfort. How much?

Why are there zombies? Are there zombies because there' ( Read more... )

It seems to me the only rational thing to explain zombies is that their viral, because they can make you one if you're bitten. With that assumption, it's hard to believe that a virus can truly animate dead tissue, like so many movies have (with long dead corpses busting from the grave). It just doesn't seem logical. It's seem more rational that those infected are put into a coma-like state, where most of their vital organs begin to rot and their blood coagulates and they slowly start breaking down and really "dieing". Before death by decay happens though, with what little electricity that burns in their damaged minds, they spring up with a primal hunger for blood. I have never seen a satisfied zombie after a kill, they always want more, and with their obvious decay happening, I'm hard pressed to think they can actually metabolize food. This is made apparent by their stride. Although newer movies tend to have more fast footed undead, it seems to me with all the cerebial damage and decay, their shuffling is what I'd expect from a real zombie. Verbal skills I think are pretty non-existant amongst them too. They moan sure, and maybe early in their decay they can say what they can to trick their prey to get closer, but a full zombified being I doubt would have much to say other than "let me eat you" in an inaudible moan. I'm assuming as much as I can by how earth viruses act (though, I don't think there's many around that actually make zombies) on my information, but if indeed did orginate from space, it's kinda up in the air. Things we consider could never happen could happen outside of our plain of study. We can assume, but there's no telling really.

I don't think Romero's movies are practical representations of how zombies could actually work in life at all, though I suppose most would say thinking zombies are possible at all isn't practical. I give up.
