good news!

I am delighted to share the news that today I signed a contract to help write a college-level textbook titled "Sex and Power: A Global Perspective on Gender Inequality." The other two co-authors are sociologists, and they realized that they needed someone with expertise in American history and religion.

I've actually been working on this project for a couple months now, though I didn't want to say anything about it publicly until the contract was signed. I've already substantially revised existing drafts of two chapters, on gender and religion and gender and work, and I'm beginning work on the first chapter I will draft entirely from scratch, on gender and violence. I'm enjoying the work immensely. The lead author is my uncle, which is why he knew my background and that I was looking for work, but I feel like I have enough to contribute that this isn't just nepotism. It's so good to feel like I'm finally really using my skills again, working on a project that at least two people -- my coauthors -- care about, and hopefully will be of use to many more readers in a couple years.
