Well, that's not how I intended it to be read but I really like your interpretation!

My original intent was that D was prolonging Leon's life, supposedly so he could finish his cigarette, and the story cuts off right as Leon dies. You were dead-on (no pun intended) about Leon being with D now.

How about mortal Leon dies and immortal Leon gets to stay with D? This is possibly the crueler side of the Count here, but its open to many interpretations, which is why I liked it. You can many endings - I feel its up to me. Most excellent & thank you!
