Title: One Step Closer

Rating: PG13

Characters/Pairings: Count D, Leon, various police force members/ DxLeon

Notes: Response to the "Rain" challenge. Word count is waaaaay over, too lazy to count, but I felt that I needed to go in depth with this one. More of a one-shot than a drabble, but I felt it was necesary to present the story the way I saw it should be told. Angst and suicide elements inside, for a little heads-up.

I had walked across the bypass over the river so many times, and no one ever told me that I would someday jump off it.

My shop was in shambles - some drunken fools thinking they'd have a night of fun destroyed everything they could get their hands on and killed all the animals. I had no means to repair anything, my money was tight as it was to begin with, and....

It was raining. I was wearing my favorite silk tunic and leggings, my black shoes spattered with mud. I had left Leon a farewell letter on his doorstep, so that he wouldn't worry when they found my body. I put one foot on the ledge.

its all over d theres nothing left to go home to anymore...

Then another.

the animals are dead leon could never love you....

I spread my arms out wide, like a diver about to leap from the high-dive. Closing my eyes, I swayed forward, shifting my weight so that I was leaning over the river, about to fall to my death.

But then I heard him.

"D, NO!" Leon screamed, running up behind me, the sirens of the police cars sounded muffled, like they were so very far away.

It was then I realized that I wanted to live. I whirled around to face Leon, but I did so so suddenly that I lost my balance and fell, down, down to where the river waited with open arms...

Leon threw himself halfway over the side, reaching out desperately for my outstretched hand, and for the briefest of moments my fingers were entwined with his, but gravity overtook me and as I hit the water with a sickening thud, I heard him call.

"I love you, D"

If only he had been one step closer, he could have reached me and  maybe this never would have happened.
