Podfic Recs! STXI, SGA, J2, and some others

Jul 16, 2010 00:41

I've been enjoying the shit out of some podfics lately. It's my new favorite thing while driving, pulling weeds, cleaning the house, or eating lunch. There is something so amazing about having fanfic with you everywhere, even when there is no internet or no hands available to hold a book. The downside of podfics is the feedback part. I listen when I'm away from the computer, and when I get back I don't often remember to go find the author/reader and feedback. Which is lousy on my part, so I'll have to do better. The other downside is that with NC-17 slash Podfics (and voice memos, and wordpad notes) on my iPhone, I get twitchy as a grasshopper in a hen house when anyone picks up my phone. You've got to keep a close eye on what people browse into!

A lot of these links come from the Audiofic Archive.  Almost all of the links to that archive are for the Audiobook format (.m4b) because that's what I prefer.  I like the way my iPod will bookmark my spot in the story, and link chapters together.  For a huge series like Illogical that's important.  However, all the fics on that archive also come in MP3 format.  To find them click on the author, reader, fandom or pairing tag and search until you find what you want.  All of the podfic posts I've linked below contain links to the fic.  You can find more communities that post or host podfics here at my pinboard.

Here are some that I've really enjoyed.

ST:XI

Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit by lazulisong , read by templemarker : Gen, PG-13, Jim Kirk, OMC
This one is amazing. It's funny as hell and made me laugh out loud several times, and yet it's poignant and insightful into Jim's character. It's got one of the best OMC's I've read in Trek fandom, and I adore the focus on the Vulcan language and the insight it offered into Jim's thoughts. One of my very favorite Gen Trek fics.

These Kids, They Lost Their Graces by affectingly , read by templemarker : NC-17, Kirk/McCoy
"There are moments in Jim's life that act as axis points." There are surprisingly few Kirk/McCoy podfics. This one has a great characterization for Kirk, and is smokin hot.

The Illogical Series by Waldorf (text here), read by 2naonh3_cl2 : NC-17, Kirk/Spock, and numerous other pairings
This is an amazing series. It's an AU in which Kirk doesn't take Pike up on his dare, yet ends up in Starfleet anyway. It's got math!genius Kirk, which I love, and a very interesting development between he and Spock. Waldorf then goes on to write fics for damn near every other character and pairing for the AOS, and they are amazing. I particularly love the ones for Uhura (I love the descriptions of her family; they are quite detailed), and T'Pring. The chapter with T'Pring is outstanding. Waldorf made her real and three-dimensional, interesting and fascinating in her childhood with Spock, and they way they develop together. I also really enjoy her insight into Vulcan culture in that chapter and the one about Sarek. The anthology audiobook is extremely long, almost 12 hours, and I'm not done with it yet, but it's still one of my favorite ST:XI fics and podfics.

Also, a podfic by the same reader for Part 22 of the series, (When I Grow Up) I'll Be A Monster, is here. It's about Jim's experience on Tarsus IV. I haven't heard it yet, so I can't review it, but I fully expect to love it.

You'll Get There In The End (It Just Takes A While) by seperis , read by revolutionaryjo : NC-17, Kirk/Spock
This is an amazing K/S, and an amazing character piece for both Kirk and Spock. It's long, and interweaves memories with the present story, and I love it.

Not In The Stars But In Ourselves written and read by Wintercreek : NC-17, Kirk/Spock/Uhura
Pon Farr, one of my favorite threesomes, and beautiful writing. Yum!

J2

Do I Seem Bullettproof to You? by fleshflutter  and read by podcath  : NC-17, prostitution
Summary: When he can't find any acting work, Jared takes a job as driver and bodyguard to Jensen, who is an extremely expensive prostitute with a bad habit of attracting crazy people.
Angsty and hot and very well written and read. I really enjoy Cath's voice, and always love her work.  You can also find her other podfics here.

Something Borrowed, Something Blue by belyste  and read by maryaminx : NC-17
Another prostitution fic, but I just love Jenson in that role! This one is sweet, yet still smokin hot.

Stargate: Atlantis

Written By The Victors  by cesperanza  with multiple readers: R, several pairings
One of the best SGA fics ever. It's geeky and brilliant and *moving* in the way that all the best SGA fics are: Atlantis is *home*, their home, and they will burn down two galaxies if needed to keep her safe. This podfic totally does it justice, and is amazing it its own right with so many readers contributing to the story.
ETA 12/12: The link above goes to the Series|ars atlantiadae tag at the Audiofic Archive, which includes music and chanting that fans have written for the fic!!  The Serial Edition of the fic (audiobook and MP3) give you a zip file with the fic broken down into 5 parts, instead of the whole five hours in one file.  Or you can get the five hour file by scrolling down.

Harmonic Function by shaenie  and read by fiercelydreamed : NC-17, McKay/Sheppard, BDSM
An extremely hot fic, one of my favorite BDSM fics. I love her Top!Rodney, and he doesn't get written often enough.

With Intent by shaenie  and read by rheanna27 : NC-17, McKay/Sheppard
I love Rheanna's voice, and I love the way John slowly comes to realize his feelings over the course of the fic. It's introspective, funny and very hot.

Now if I could just find Shaenie's C-'Verse and Indellible as podfics I'd be happy!

Ordinary Life by astolat  and cesperanza , read by zoetrope : NC-17, McKay/Sheppard
"They all think I’m your boyfriend anyway," John said.
"Yes, so? You are my boyfriend," Rodney said. "Why is this a problem?"
"They thought I was before I even was!" John yelled.
This one makes me laugh every time, and it's got *excellent* characterization for both of them.

SGA Gen: I've discovered that I enjoy hearing gen podfics. I don't read a whole lot of gen fic; I guess when I sit down to read I want the romance. I can stick it out for gen podfic, though. Also, when listening around other people it's easier to answer questions when I start laughing out loud out of nowhere.

It appears that Martha Wilson is the Queen of SGA Gen, and master of the AU genre. She has the ability to create original characters that fit flawlessly in with the cannon cast, and she can describe fantastic new plots and scenarios that somehow still cast light onto the characters in a way that stays true to cannon. I love all of her fic that I have read so far.  Martha's website and AO3 profile. Also, several of her Gen fic has been recorded by podcath , who's voice I really enjoy hearing, so it's a double win for me.   More of podcath's recordings here.

Earth 2 by Martha Wilson, read by podcath
An AU that starts out with the listener not knowing anything at all about what's going on, and gradually fills in the gaps. It was very suspenseful, and I enjoyed it.

Raiders of the Seven Systems by Martha Wilson, read by podcath .
Another AU, this time John is a space pirate! She paints a very distrusting and skittish picture of John (he makes a wonderful woobie, doesn't he?), but gives him Teyla and Ronon for support.

Retrograde series by Martha Wilson, with various readers:
This one is a complex AU, but I'm not going to give away anything about the plot. I will say that Martha weaves a very detailed and interesting story that kept me listening even after I was done with my yardwork. Only the first three parts of the series have been podficced so far, but the rest is online for reading here or here.
Retrograde read by Kyizi
Recovery read by lunate8
Movie Night read by lunate8

Between the Lines by Friendshipper, read by rheanna27
A shorter (41 minutes) fic that starts pre-series and has a very humorous relationship between John and Rodney. I laughed out loud several times. It actually almost feels like pre-slash to me by the end, but isn't listed as such.

Miscellaneous Fandoms (one story each):

American Idol

Time of Your Life written by astolat  and read by aphelant: R, Cook/Archie
This story is so very sweet, and I just love this pairing.

Mythbusters

Normal Working Relationship by Toft  and read by thingswithwings : R, Jamie/Adam, BDSM
This is one of my favorite BDSM fics ever. The kink just evolves out of the characters, it's so organic and very well written. Plus, it's just so obvious from the show that this is what's really going on!

Sherlock Holmes

Homo Ex Machina by Toft , read by fayjay: NC-17, Holmes/Watson
Watson gets into a rather embarrassing situation when an anonymous letter arrives with breakfast. Can he escape it without destroying his and Holmes' friendship? Could sort of be described as crack, but not really. She starts out with a cracky premise, but develops it extremely well. I really enjoyed the style of writing, it reads as very English to me, and the reader's English accent was just the cherry on top: perfect! This one is an excellent listen.

ETA:  Recently a Podfic lovememe took place, but I just found it, so I'm linking it anyway.
