2015 Round-up Fic Meme

Jan 21, 2016 17:44

Nearly a month after 2016 started, I have finally gotten around to tallying this all up.
papervoiced tagged me for this meme, and I'll go ahead and let people who want to do it self-tag (if there's anyone who wants to and hasn't already done it). Send me a link in the comments!!!

total number of completed stories:

/eyes glaze over

... 58, counting all the fic-based works for SASO. 20 if you don't. Add 4 to either of those numbers if you feel like adding the posted chapters of Let the Games Begin (CLAMP Megaverse Pirates v Ninja AU, ensemble), each of which is basically a novella in itself that just happens to be part of a larger whole.

total word count:

My AO3 stats say 198,928, which is probably counting some things I wouldn't count, but I'm not going to go back through and add them up. Let's estimate somewhere around 100,000, just to be safe, because of course there were also words written in stories that are yet to be published.

fandoms written in:

CLAMP - 20 Mensou ni Onegai, Angelic Layer, CLAMP in Wonderland, CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, CLAMP School Detectives, Code Geass, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, CLAMP School Defenders Duklyon, Gate 7, Legal Drug/Drug & Drop, Kobato, Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda, Legend of Chun Hyang, Shirahime-Syo, Shiritsu Horitsuba Gakuen, Suki Dakara Suki, Tokyo Babylon, Tsubasa [Whatever] Chronicle, Wish, X, xxxHoLic

("But Skinner," you say, "Wouldn't it be faster just to say, 'ALL OF THEM'?" Answer: Nope! I do not have a fic filed under Cl--)

... ... ...

And technically I referenced Clover very directly in the Halloween story-within-the-story for Let the Games Begin. So. That too.

BUT I NEVER WROTE FIC FOR HIDARI TE OR MERIKURI OR WATASHI NO SUKI NO HITO OR SWEET VALERIAN OR ... several things whose names I don't even remember ... AND I DIDN'T REFERENCE SOURYUUDEN THIS YEAR SO IT'S STILL NOT ALL OF THEM YET. "Write all the CLAMP" is not a challenge for the weak of heart.

Sports Anime/Manga - Chihayafuru, Haikyuu!!, Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, Yowamushi Pedal

Other - Ace Attorney, Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV), Jurassic World, Naruto, Original Work, Princess Knight, Rope, Rurouni Kenshin, Star Trek, The Avengers

looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?

I never write what I expect. This year, I managed to write BOTH more than I expected (thanks to SASO) and less than I expected (thanks to Let the Games Begin and The Butterfly Effect kicking my butt). Basically, I didn't meet the goals I set for myself during very specific times of the year, but at other times of the year I produced way more than I'm usually capable of, often for fandoms I hadn't even been in before this year.

what’s your own favorite story of the year?

... ... ... how the heck to I answer this question? I love all my children! And AO3 doesn't track my own fic for me to see which one I've read most often. Looking back, I think maybe I can narrow top three favorite (out of 38) SASO stories down to: The Long Game (Haikyuu!!, DaiSuga Pool Shark AU), Last Songs (TeniPuri, SanaYuki), and Joseki (HikaGo, Sai reincarnation AU). For non-SASO stories... Top three are probably Samurai Blues (Naruto, Hashirama & Madara music AU), Order in the Courtship (Ace Attorney, EdgeWright/NaruMitsu whatever you want to call it), and If You Knew (Tokyo Babylon, post-series Subaru-centric)

did you take any writing risks this year?

Joining SASO, boy howdy. [That's the Sports Anime Shipping Olympics, for those of you who are going, "What the heck is a SASO?" and it was my first actively social competition/exchange in all my many years in fandom.] Also challenging myself to do treats for everyone who requested Tokyo Babylon during Yuletide. As far as structure and execution, I think I took more risks by making visual art than in my writing, but of course Let the Games Begin has more freaking characters in it than War and Peace, who are partaking in an actual festival with actual events, and that's always a risk!

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year?

Post the endings of these two damned stories that WILL NOT DIE. (That I love with all my heart.) Finish The Rules Saga for NaNoWriMo.

best story of the year?

Best how? Best writing by some indescribable standard? Best concept? Best execution? All so relative, so impossible to judge!!

I think people have been going by Kudos count on AO3 for a standardized measure of this, and of course my highest Kudos count for all things with parts published in 2015 is Let the Games Begin at 166. And if we're being critical, yes, that probably does have some of the better writing, better concept work, and at least halfway decent execution (on things that NEED good execution) out of all the things I've done this year. HOWEVER, I started publishing that in 2013, so not all of the Kudos are from this year. Over its entire lifespan, it has a kudos rate of only 0.219 kudos per day! (Although, as longfic writers all know, you can only get one kudos per reader no matter how many times they want to kudos each new update, and no matter how much you deserve it. Therefore, as time goes on, your kudos rate naturally approaches a teeny tiny fraction of what it was during the new fic flurry.)

The fic with the highest kudos per day rate was the SASO story, Pour Some Sugar on Me (Haikyuu!!, DaiSuga, explicit), with 155 kudos and a kudos rate of 1.13 kudos per day at the time of posting. It's my only story to have more kudos than days at present. THEN AGAIN, I'm not sure that this (admittedly lovely, if I do say so myself) PWP represents my "best work".

Of *non*-PWP stories, the title of highest kudos rate currently goes to Eyes Only (Tokyo Babylon, canon compliant humor fic) with 30 kudos, and thus a rate of .909 kudos per day. This fic has probably plateaued, but when it was published people did seem to really resonate with the concept of the story being told. So, one of those three (Let the Games Begin, Pour Some Sugar on Me, or Eyes Only) may be objectively considered the "best story" for 2015 as far as we know right now.

Probably history will remember some completely different story. It usually does.

most popular story of the year?

Yeah, that's probably Pour Some Sugar On Me. 1,690 hits since it went up, leading to a hit rate of 12.34 hits per day. Runners up were Is This Guy For Real? (Tokyo Babylon, X era comedy fic), at 199 hits (6.03 hits/day) and of course Let the Games Begin, which has managed to maintain a hit rate of 3.75 hits/day for all of its 2+ years online for a total of 2,845 hits. The entire 15 Mokona universe is without a doubt my most popular stuff overall (with the possible exception of my actually finished FMA epic)

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Awwww, really? I felt so unusually loved this year, it's hard to answer this question! Well, I can't even really say what is or is not appreciated at large, but I never hear anyone talk about my SASO poem-fic (it's a poem, but it tells a story via implication) Taming Auburn Seas (Chihayafuru, ChihaKana), and of course not enough people are able to appreciate my Princess Knight fic, The Most Vicious Predators Are Also The Cutest (Ribbon no Kishi, Blood>Sapphire) because not enough people have read Princess Knight. Get on that, universe!!!

most fun story to write:

Are you kidding? Writing isn't fun. Writing is torture! But Is This Guy For Real? is one that I could laugh at while I was writing it because I enjoyed the premise so much, and it was a much easier to write story than many.

story with the single sexiest moment:

I'm guessing it was either Pour Some Sugar On Me or Let the Games Begin, depending on what you're into, but I don't think anything else that referenced sex in 2015 was even remotely sexy. Mostly just silly. Sex is pretty hilarious. There is one as-yet-unpublished WIP that I thought was pretty hot, but don't expect to see it until next year. It's in Subaru PoV, which is ridiculously hard.

most sweet story:

So, I have been known to think some things are sweet or cute that others would never dream of labeling as such, but I'm going to see if I can identify the most *actually rot your teeth cute* story I've published in 2015.

... ... ...

After a thorough review, I think the story that epitomizes the idea of, "That's so cute I'd have to throw up if I weren't smiling so much," comes down to a tie between You're a Firework (Haikyuu!!, KageHina flirting during homework) and The Proposal (CCS, SakuSyao marriage proposal fic, but seriously what can you write about those kids that isn't deadly cute?)

Honorable mentions go to A Spoonful of Sugar (TeniPuri, AtoRyo) for being the fic with the highest actual sugar content, and You Are My Home (TeniPuri, SanaYuki) for being my favorite sweet(-ish) story.

”holy crap, thats wrong, even for you!” story:

I. Am never. Wrong. :D

Not in that sense, anyway. Seriously, I've never had anyone look at my work and go, "Holy crap, that's so wrong!!! How could you do that?". But I *do* get the "How could you do that?" reaction for my commitment to research and over-the-top song parodies within fics, so if we're talking about a story where I took one of my personal peculiarities/vices/virtues as a writer and pushed it to ridiculous traditionally considered "uncalled for" levels, that would probably be... one of three stories. Master of the Club (TeniPuri, Atobe-centric script/parody), which technically was written years ago but only published this year because I finally got tired of waiting, Go Go Meganes (TeniPuri, The Meganes origin story) because all you really have to do to push the boundaries of cracktastic nonsense is "Take Prince of Tennis Seriously About the Things These Kids Do", or Once in a Lifetime (YowaPeda, ImaNaruSaka tech startup AU) just because... there's so much self-indulgence in the technology and the vocabulary and the sort of things they're doing, and they're so inappropriate in ways that can only be achieved by young asshole programmers with no sense of decency living in what is functionally a dormitory setting while sleep deprived.

What can I say? No stories this year needed an original translation of any passages from the Iliad from the Greek, through Japanese, to English, OR any calculations about multidimensional travel and the associated effects due to the theory of relativity. Let the Games Begin still has the most research and planning involved of any story I'm working on right now, but most of that was actually done in 2013, and right now it's just taking that planning and turning it into workable prose, most of which has been silly but fairly vanilla.

The only story with the characters callously and knowingly doing things that are truly morally wrong, and fairly objectionable, is The Things I Do For You (Code Geass, SuzaLulu, spoilers for R2), but no readers have made a big deal out of it.

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:

... ... ... I often find that I understand more about the characters through writing fic, but my impressions don't often shift per se. I was very new to Haikyuu!! when I wrote Not My Best Day (HQ, OiKage-ish-but-not-really) so I had only gotten a sense of the serious, threatening side of Oikawa consciously. Writing the story blindsided me with my unrealized absorption of his more playful/imperfectly faked uncanny valley side. Not Sorry At All (Naruto, music AU, Deidara PoV, Sasuke-centric) gets an interesting credit here, because it involves a character relationship that was being actively concealed in the manga at the time I plotted it out (earlier than when I published it). When I wrote it, I looked at what I believed was the character relationship in the manga between Obito, Tobi, and Madara, then decided there was no way it could possibly work in my setting and gave them a new one that worked for the worldbuilding I'd done (related to an as-yet-unpublished story). While going through final edits before publishing Not Sorry At All, I realized that I had accidentally given them the relationship that had by then been revealed in the canon, and I no longer had to tag it as a departure from canon but as a spoiler. Oops.

And yet, I can't say that the act of writing this story at any point caused me to rethink the relationship black box clusterfuck that was being presented in Naruto while I was writing it. Of stories that pertained to canons I am well versed in that in some way shifted my character perceptions while writing it, I'm going to say, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl. I can't say what it is I understood, but after writing it, I definitely felt like I understood Hokuto a little better than I did when I started.

Of course, in unpublished fic, there's the one I started on the flight back from Japan right after New Years 2015 where there's some DoE!Fuuma/Subaru dub-con (reverse spoiler, that's the one I thought was kinda hot but that's still unfinished and thus unpublished), and reference to this time Lady Sumeragi tried to buy Subaru a nice male prostitute so he could get over Seishirou (emphasis on "tried"), and it's true that I'd never considered before writing that story how Lady Sumeragi would absolutely do that, provided it was the right kind of prostitute.

most unintentionally telling story:

I don't understand what this means. Is this the one that is secretly the most about me, instead of about the characters? But all of my stories are about BOTH the characters AND me, because I wrote them! It's a symbiotic relationship!

... ... ...

I'm just going to say Whereupon My Co-Counsel Had Some Explaining To Do (HikaGo, Ogata PoV lawyers AU) and not explain why.

hardest story to write:

This is always In You (Tokyo Babylon/X, SeiSub divergent AU). I've been writing chapter 2 for more than six years, working on it a little every year, and it never gets easier. Subaru and Seishirou never gets easier. It's done now, and I have a big decision to make about whether I'll publish it now or later, but trying to start the chapter after that is a massive hurdle.

biggest disappointment:

That's a run-off. I didn't get to finish Let the Games Begin on my predetermined timeline due to the story fighting me too much. I also couldn't write what I had planned to be the last ten chapters of The Butterfly Effect (Naruto, Uchiha-centric divergent AU) at all because I determined that the only endings the story could have were ones I found personally unsatisfying with regard to the characters and their personal growth in canon. It would never be worthy of the people I was writing about, so I just didn't want it written. But after coming to that conclusion, I figured out a way I could have it end satisfyingly at Chapter 15 instead of 25, so maybe that's actually a win? Hard to say. It was tough either way.

biggest surprise:

SASO. What even. Why did this happen to me? I'm a good person.
