Steaming

So steaming *really* reduces the size of things... I put an inch of water in the bottom of the steamer and the bok choy in the basket, and steamed until the stems looked pretty translucent. I threw them in cold water, then chopped them in 1" bits. Then I diced a clove of garlic and a shooting marble-sized thing of ginger, sauteed the garlic in oil, added the bok choy then the ginger and some sesame oil and soy sauce and cooked on medium-low until the liquid went mostly away. While the steaming was happening I rubbed some olive oil into the $3 salmon fillet I got on the way home and threw it in the toaster skin side up on broil. It smoked a bit too much after a few minutes so I turned it down to 300 to finish. If I had a grill I would have used it, but that's another story. Add some bread and you've got a healthy meal (see, I *can* cook things that are good for you).

Total time: 35 minutes. A bit much for a one-shot meal, but it's Friday.
Total cost: $3 for fish, greens were free, but they'd be cheap anyway.

My Italian flatmate's dad is getting a new grill with a gas line, so we are getting the old grill once the gas line gets installed. Once the gas line gets installed. Once the gas line gets installed. Yeah. I want a grill, could ya tell? Still, contractors will be contractors, and we'll eventually get a free grill far nicer than the one I'd be able to afford.
