When the Alastor was first sighted, Tom Pullings felt confident he could capture her easily, without waiting for help. His ship, the Franklin, was a fine one, the most swift he ever commandeered, save for the Surprise, of course. And then she was Aubrey’s, deep inside always had been, so it did not count. But the bloody scoundrels fought doggedly, and the melee was far from over when the Surprise in turn boarded the French pirate. The cries of “Captain’s down!” reached his ears, as well as a inhuman wail, which a distant part of his mind registered as his own. The scar-faced commander was a fearsome sight to behold: never in life had he lusted for his enemies’ blood so. Yet as he tore them to pieces, he felt no satisfaction, only remorse, the curses uttered directed at his sole self and his foolish pride.
