Star Trek.
Okay, I'm going to say right off that this is a hard one for me to review. I spent my formative years watching TNG with a fervor borderlining on religious fanaticism. I consumed Trek. But then, I gave up on DS9 at about season 5, Voyager at about season 4, and the only episode of Enterprise I've seen all the way through was the pilot.

I read the retconning as establishing that this is a parallel universe, one in which all of the movies take place. Yeah, not exactly gracefully done, but better than it could have been. It's a trick that would only work in the Star Trek universe, where they've established the existence of parallel timelines/universes, and it was nice that they nodded to that rather than ignoring it outright.
I think the one change that wasn't canon was the change in Spock's personality. He's much more clearly Vulcan and human, as opposed to a Vulcan who is sometimes a bit human, and both the young and old Spock reflected this change. His relationship with Uhura fits this personality, because he can share some of his deep emotions without feeling conflicted. Only some, of course.
Having said all of this, I came out feeling like it was a great movie, and I want to see more of this, and go back and see some of the Trek I haven't seen yet. Star Trek was more part of my, uh, teenagerhood than my childhood, though, so I know I'm looking at it rather differently.
I like your review - I haven't really reflected yet on what the major changes in the universe, especially to Vulcan, could mean. Hahaha, maybe the next movie will be the Time Police trying to kill old Spock. That would be weird.
