The White Road (The Nightrunner series novel 5)

Nov 14, 2010 02:33

Today I've finished reading The White Road by Lynn Flewelling. Frankly, the far I had read it, the more I thought that she was not the author of the previous book of her Nightrunner series. Or maybe she was the author, but the other novels of the series were written by somebody else much better. Or she was drunk or overdosed on some hard drug while writing Shadows Return.

The truth is, that Shadows Return is really bad, and The White Road is good enough to be compared with the best novels of the pentalogy. The fourth one was not worth writing, because of weak plot, lack of intrigue, irrational actions of the main characters and unreasonably high rating. The main idea of the novel is that men do not like to be gelded. Yes, that's true, but I don't need 500 pages devoted to this psychological problem to understand it. Maybe it would have been better for the author (and her readers as well) to write another story for Glimpses, but not that particular kind of shit.

The White Road, on the contrary, is surprisingly good. Flewellinng weaves several storylines into elaborate plot as she did it in her best books. There are a lot of characters known from the previous novels and some new ones, and, what is important, they act and develop like real people. The author widens the world and shows her characters travelling from south of Aurёnen through Skala and Plenimar to the Ravensfell Pass in the north. As a result we could see bright and exciting fantasy novel. And, of course, the book is a good reading for language learners: it is easy to read it in transport without using a dictionary.

P.S. If there are any mistakes in the post above, you're welcome to correct them. :)
