Title: Cat and Mouse (Fox and Weasel)
Fandom: Naruto (Naruto/Itachi)
Word count: 606
Rating: Teen (for violence and, le gasp, men kissing!)
Disclaimer: I don’t own Naruto. After this… I never will.
Notes: AU. Sasuke and Sakura are dead -- killed in some alternative sequence by Itachi. Only Naruto is left and he has a plan (sort of) and Itachi thinks he Knows (but he doesn’t).

This is meant not to make sense. It’s just a little characterization exercise I did (to practice for the Ita/Naru porn I’ve been promising a friend… Itachi’s a bitch to write.)

He watched apathetically as the claws detached the ring from his comrade’s limp fingers. The victor took it, examined it, turned it over and over, and then put it on, kicking the shark’s corpse into a crater. He watched the blue disappear. It was a shame.

“Hey, bastard,” the vulgar tongue dared to speak to him. His only hindrance was wrapped around the tanned finger. “If I get the ring, I get into the club, too, right?”

Red eyes met and matched in ferocity. He broke the demon’s gaze and side stepped, not completely willing to let the stranger have his back. “I’ll take you to our leader, Uzumaki Naruto.”

---

“These meetings are becoming to frequent,” Kisame would have said, but the space to his right stayed silent as the blonde emerged from the adjoining room. His face was hallow with concentration and deep in a frown, but upon their meeting the expression disappeared and the reckless smile appeared.

“Looks like you got a new partner,” the blonde said and stopped a safe distance from the Uchiha. After scrutinizing over the other’s indifference, the blonde frowned again and sighed, saying, “It’s not as if you were my first choice either.”

“I suppose you’re here to avenge my brother -- to kill me.” It was said pointedly, flat, and in the monotonous voice that Sasuke could never have produced.

Uzumaki snorted and laughed. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

---

They stayed the first night in a small hotel in a village bordering the Waterfall. The room was dense, dark, and smelt of rotting wood. It made him think of an ancient forest, something sacred and wise - nothing like the shack it appeared to be.

“You cried when I killed him.”

“I know.”

“And her, too.”

“I know.”

He ran the cloth over the blade of the katana and let the sound ring in the room. The blonde of the other bed didn’t flinch. He sighed and closed his eyes.

“You didn’t cry when I killed your partner.”

Saying Kisame did not matter was left in silence out of respect for the dead. Itachi ran the cloth over the blade again.

---

Itachi watched the blonde kill their target. Watched the claws sprout from fingertips and rip the man’s still-beating heart from his chest. Watched the blood spray profusely from the wound and splatter the blonde’s face as their eyes met.

Itachi did not need the red monochrome to remember.

---

“You are the demon,” the blonde hissed under his breath. “I may have the monster sealed within me, but you are the demon.”

Itachi didn’t bother to argue as his eyes swirled black into the familiar coal black -- images of similar eyes dieing with the illusion. He was pleased when the blonde didn’t return to the room that night.

---

He knew it would come to this, a battle between them, a show of hatred and passion. He had anticipated it from the moment the blonde had focused on the ring.

“Is this for Sasuke?” Itachi asked as the red chakra exploded. “Or, perhaps, the girl.”

The boy charged him with a fist off crimson energy. It was easily avoided.

The blonde’s skills were underrated, however. With unmatched speed, he was there, in from of him, next to him, and red eyes were close enough to pick out each other’s discolored flecks. The illusions were useless when the blonde balled a fist of his cloak and came in dangerously closer.

He was there and the breath was warm on his lips. “This is for me.”

And they kissed, impromptu, in the heat of battle and fiery chakra.
