I have the same tendency (obviously, given my online work in general ;)), having gone over many a timeline for series I've never watched, read, or played...

As for this series itself, you should definitely give Sex and the City a chance at some point. Much like Star Trek: The Next Generation, the tone of Season One is rather different from later seasons, but it finds its footing relatively quickly--in fewer episodes than TNG, at any rate.
