All the World's Waiting for You and the Power You Possess

With apologies to Gerald Ford, our long international nightmare is over.

Barack Hussein Obama is now the 44th President of the United States of America.

I've been saying that to myself over and over, just as a reminder that it's actually, really true now.

There were a few moments I really liked in the inaugural address, including his ( Read more... )

My moment of shock came when he used the word "data" in the inaugural address and, by all appearances, actually both understood what the word meant and assigned it some value.

I know!

Not only that, but it was surrounded by words like "indicators," "statistics," and "measurable," and he wants to "restore science to its rightful place"...I could've fallen out of my chair.

Obama also used thirty-eight different (but pre-existing) words of four syllables or more which weren't "America" or "Afghanistan."

Truly, a new era is upon us.

Is America only a friend when you approve of who we elect?

I was actually reacting to Obama's statement that "America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity," and hoping that America itself (or the American government, rather, which is what is meant in this context) will act as a friend in a way that it didn't during the previous administration.

Yeah. I wouldn't consider someone a friend if they clearly didn't give a shit about my life or what I wanted out of it, and that sort of applies on the international level too. I haven't considered the US a friend in my adult years. More like the obnoxious neighbour you have to constantly appease and make small talk with so as not to end up having screaming arguments over the backyard fence.

Exactly.

With luck, America will be more neighbourly now, and the backyard barbecues (or their international analogues) will be decidedly less awkward. ;)
