Some of the content on both is cool. Some is mindless. Some people on both are evil. Some are cool. It is what you make of it. This year's flavor is Facebook, a couple years ago it was LJ, in 2015 it will be something else.
Exactly. Though one of many of my issues. (I, unlike Fuckerberg, don't feel that "privacy is obsolete".)
I prefer a non-walled garden, I prefer available anonymity even if I don't use it, and I prefer my "internet experience" to not turn into something gatekeepered by a service making its money selling my personal information. (Ref: Facebook comment signins on unrelated sites.)
And I'll add: if some douchebag thinks he can monetize my inconsequential blatherings as a middle-aged geek as I use his part of the Internets for social networking, I really don't care.
