Restaurant Review: Sbarro

Aug 02, 2007 13:00

Today I dined at Sbarro, located in the southern food court of the Eaton Centre. With an overly generous 30 minutes to devote to lunch, I decided to take my time and savour each minute at this delightful establishment.

The Maitre d' not being in evidence, I made my way  to the glassed-in counter where Sbarro's offerings were displayed with pride beneath the sneeze guard. After careful deliberation I selected the baked ziti, ignoring my fellow patrons' insistence that I join them for lunch. (To the large gentleman in line behind me: the next time you wish to extend an invitation, consider adding a smile to your barely audible repetition of 'come on, come on'.)  To accompany the meal: a Pepsi.

I settled the bill in advance (a reasonable $9.10) and was given a knife and fork of the finest plastic  - compliments of the house!

The baked ziti was perfection itself.  A zesty blend of hot and cold bits, something resembling cheese, and the occasional crunchy thing, I thought I'd died and gone to gourmand heaven. It was all I could do to keep it down. The Pepsi, an insouciant 2006, turned out to be an inspired choice, it's bouquet reminiscent of used bathwater .

In short: much like the meal itself, I shall return!
