Still Better Than Apocalypse Now
I've just seen Full Metal Jacket again for about the 150th time. It's still good. The one thing that always occurs to me after watching it is: how on Earth did Matthew Modine manage not to become really famous and successful after that? This time I decided to find out.
I discovered a fascinating fact. Possibly everybody already knows it, but it's still new and exciting to me. According to the internet, Modine was originally offered Tom Cruise's part in Top Gun, but he turned it down because he didn't like the film's Cold War politics. I don't remember Top Gun being terribly political, but I haven't seen it for a long time.
I can't help but think that movie history would have been better served if Matthew Modine had been the one who went on to have a successful movie career while Tom Cruise was left to be utterly batshit and slightly rubbish on his own in peace.
Also, Animal Mother is Jayne Cobb! Am I the only one who never noticed that before?
