A day in Bella Coola

So it's been a year and a half since my last post. I'm still alive and actually lurking livejournal regularly, I keep meaning to post but it just never happens. I'm back a my old job with JB Water and Vac (should post about that too) but have wrangled a long vacation.

After spending the whole weekend at home in Edmonton wrenching on the bike and arranging care for my pet rodent (and just laying around), I finally hit the road Monday afternoon. Eat at L&W Pizza in Hinton (classy grub and setting, fast food service), fail to find a place to stay in Jasper, and camp in Robson park.

Tuesday I try a short hike on the alpine lakes trail, but I have trouble with my feet. Have not been hiking in a while; are my hiking boots smaller or my feet bigger? In any case, I hobble back down and head to Williams Lake BC.

Wednesday I get to do something I have long looked forward to: the road to Bella Coola. It is everything they say: good pavement, twisty road, ample services, and awesome scenery. Near the end is a 50 km gravel section featuring a steep decent (called 'The Hill' with caps) that I coasted down. The rear brake was doing all the work, and near the bottom it just quit! The pedal dropped to the bottom with no resistance like the hose had popped or something. Oil reservoir is full, no leaks, disk was hot but not crazy, what could be wrong? Not too big a deal, the engine and front brake held me the rest of the way down, but I'll need to look into this!
But still a good day. The Hill would have sucked in the rain, and really sucked with rain and brake trouble!
