"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35
God wants us to love one another like He love us. When we do, the world sees Him, So then, how does he love?
Last week, Pastor Jeff preached a sermon on three aspects of God's love, and I was really challenged to step my love level up a notch. Here they are :
1. The love of God initiates--- "We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:19
If you sitting back waiting for opportunities to love people an share truth, it may be a while. Thank goodness God didn't take that approach with us! He took the initiative and sought us out while we were still enemies. The love of God is proactive... it starts things.
2. The love of God serves--"Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him." John 13:5
To Jesus, loving people meant serving them. It wasn't glamorous. It wasn't glitzy. No one gave Him a sticker or a pat on the back. He did it to show us the incredible love of the Father. The hands of THE HOLY GOD washed the feet of sinful man and then, a few days later, were pierced for the sins of the world!
3. The love of God sacrifices-- "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers." 1 John 3:16
God's doesn't stop loving when it becomes inconvenient . He gave everything! Walking in the love of God means giving up your plans, your money, your time, your sweat and blood for people who probably don't deserve or appreciate it . Wow!
