Science is basically a faith in patterns. Though I'd ask whether the universe is indeed orderly. There's at least two instances of pattern-breaking within current knowledge, and both instances are met with "There has to be a reason/answer/pattern, we've just not found it yet

I see it as a continuous process of improving the general model.

There're many lines of mathematics, which seem illogical at first thought, but are applied in the real world as well (most notaably, imaginary numbers). This serves only to prove that we're so inset in our current line of mathematics that other plausible lines appear less servicable.
