A quick day-one Comic Con update...

That's mah boy, giving the San Diego Italian food selection his seal of approval. If it can be pronounced "noodles," he's all over it. The first day of Comic Con is over, and I did manage to get a few shots of interest while spending time behind the table. First up, there was yet another thing I'll never get to have in my living room, and you'd really need two if you wanted to use them as columns for the front porch. Then there was Optimus Prime's portrait in Lego, which was somehow more impressive than the actual figure in Lego they had last year. And from Sideshow Collectibles, proof that we're really living in a golden age for superhero action figures. My next post will definitely have more interesting stuff, including a bit of "arts & crafts" from myself and others. A sign for an infamous tavern from "Nodwick" will be among the offerings. By the way, San Diego is hoarding the nation's cool weather. It's in the 60's at night and the mid 70's during the day. I think if I listen closely, I can hear the streets back in KC buckling in the still-100 degree temps we've had all month. I'm not saying someone here has access to a weather satellite, but if I were to offer an opinion on where I'd start looking for the Bond villain's base...

But one thing I can report on is that one of my writin' projects was announced at SDCC: I'm writing a 120-page graphic novel based on the Diablo III video game, called "The Sword of Justice." Neat, huh? And from what I understand, a lot of what I'm coming up with (especially that Sword thing) are going to appear in the game. Apparently, a great many Diablo fans are quite adamant that if the fiction around the game is in the "current" era, things in said fiction should be either attainable or killable in digital form. :) I've just turned in the script for chapter four (of six), and that chapter one has been penciled. I wonder if Blizzard would be interested in doing a "North 40" video game so I could write more comics for that as well? I really need to find the editor for Vertigo and see if they like rural C'thulhu...

One other Comic Con thing: "Comedy" Central has put out a Comic Con Bingo card, which might have been more amusing if it had items that told me the writer had attended the actual convention, but maybe I'm being too harsh. :)

There's finally word of what's getting cut from the UK version of "Torchwood: Miracle Day." A John Barrowman sex scene, with an unnamed violent scene rumored to be axed as well. The BBC says it's the explicitness of the scene, not the genders of those involved, that made it questionable for broadcast. Savor this moment, United States viewers; for once, we've been out-pruded! I'm sure we'll do something to reclaim the title sooner or later, but we can revel in the thought that our version is the one that'll be bittorrented in the UK... which probably would have happened anyway, due to the US shows airing six days earlier, but still...

Awright, I've got my first vinyl figure to scribble on (a "pegacorn," I think the kids call it) as well as another XBox face plate, so I'd better get to it. If you weren't able to make it to Comic Con (and there must be one of you, since we were able to find a last-minute hotel room), here's a few things that might seem just as odd as a trip down one of the aisles:

- Ever take a close look at what you're eating? Like really close? Artist Caren Alpert has. Click "gallery" to see astounding ultra-close ups of food and food-like substances.
- Here's another "knock the blocks off the screen" game, but with a new twist: Crash Boom Bang gives you three methods for disposing of blocks in this physics-puzzle offering.
- I'm sure someone will shoot it down, but here's a story that touts a fuel that stores solar energy. Of course, my question is what will it do when it's ten below and snowing and I need to get to the store for a case of Red Bull?
- So in Montreal, there was sufficient water pressure in the sewers recently to lift a car.
- Apple could make a lot of people happy if this was the name of it's next OS.
- The first image from Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" has been released, and about the only thing it reveals is in space, you will probably wear a space suit.
- Here's four minutes of "Wonder Woman" pilot footage featuring both versions of her uniform, and what's probably a bit of unnecessary roughness involving a metal pipe.
- Some posters for the upcoming Avengers movie shows off Captain America's new costume. I kind of like the WWII headgear better.
- ThinkGeek has a product based on part of a chorus from a song by They Might Be Giants. Make a little birdhouse in your soul for it, won't you?
- In a desperate bid to be re-instated as a planet, Pluto sprouts a fourth moon.
- I've seen the photos of this next item, but the page I'm linking to includes video of a commercial for a peelable ice cream treat.
- How can I not post a game called Infinite Monkeys Bending Reality? Grab your experimental helmet and start altering space in the name of banana collection!
