What kind of heroes does that make us?

I can't believe I'd forgotten to post this new t-shirt design until now. Offworld tells me it's been well received (dare I say it's been considered 'shiny?'), and it's the first "serious" tee I've done in recent memory. I kind of liked how the flag/firefly contrail merged, and we've gotten a lot of complements about how it symbolizes Serenity's rise from the Alliance victory. I also managed to get a decent "weathered" look to it, taking as my inspiration several "Remember the Battle of" shirts printed for actual Civil War historical sites. I did use one quote along the side: "We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." I think that was just about the only line of dialogue from the show that hadn't been emblazoned on a t-shirt yet, aside from the one about River being "our witch."

In a future post, I'll have another one that I sent to the presses which will be out in time for Origins and all of the conventions to follow this summer. It is C'thulhu-related, though the additional work on it designed to strike fear into criminals (a superstitious and cowardly lot) probably was gilding the lily, insofar as C'thulhu's insanity-inspiring powers are concerned. Wow, that was a lot more overwrought than I'd intended. Sorry 'bout that...

Anyway, potential horrors aplenty in the form of a Smurf teaser. Really, it's almost 99% unnecessary to watch if all you want to see is how the CGI Smurfs look. The rest is famous sites around the globe turning blue, so they could easily splice in some kind of ad for Avatar at the end and not change a thing. To make up for that trailer's scant offerings, here's the international trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which is really amazing, even if the viewer (like me) hadn't been previously familiar with the comic. I'll be curious to see if this hyper-real comic book style influences future films, though I hope it doesn't become the next over-used technique like "bullet time."

Here's a man who knows the pain of trying to write for Hollywood: Writer/director Cory Edwards ran into a word that I've heard once or twice when my work has been turned down, and that word is 'edgy.' Cory wrote a script for a movie treatment of "Fraggle Rock," and he was told it wasn't 'edgy' enough. His rant is not only entertaining, but his pictorial definitions of what 'edgy' could mean are pretty funny. I agree with him that it's a complete weasel word when someone has no idea what they want beyond the money belonging to that precious young male demographic. It almost sounds like they'd want a family friendly property re-tooled to appeal to someone who would otherwise play the latest GTA game. Power to ya, Cory, and I hope your Fraggle film doesn't get Smurfed.

It's Friday, so let's link:

- The Universal Orlando Resort opened the Wizarding World of Harry Potter this week, and I think the only ones who didn't show up were the movie's catering staff and gaffers.
- This is a rather insightful installment of David Mitchell's Soapbox about references. No, not the ones on a resume, but the ones you might make if you were talking to someone.
- These Pipe Lights are either nice accents to that basement rec room, or a means for making whoever owns the building have a heart attack when they encounter them for the first time.
- Need to name a baby and you want it to have a geek flag to raise its first day out of the womb? Here's a handy list of Sci-Fi names to choose from.
- If anyone is filming a zombie movie out there, this needs to be a part of it. I mean, sure, it says it's for clearing forests, but we all know what its true destiny is.
- Catch the Star 2 is a nice distraction involving angles, power, and (of course) catching stars.
- You don't have enough games? Well, here's 235 free indie games, with links to said games below the embedded video.
- Haven't seen enough about Portal 2? Well, spoilers ahoy for these videos taken of the demo footage from E3, showing a lot about how the game starts as well as some new play mechanics: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
- Americans may be more unhealthy than our friends across the pond, but as far as I know we can't purchase Lasagna Sandwiches. Though I'm at a loss to explain why we cant.
- The 501st Legion has a "TK Project" going on which is producing some truly wild Stormtrooper headgear.
- Okay, this is a nifty mechanic: Faultline is a platforming game where you can fold and unfold the play area to open and close access to various areas. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it.
